So, I'm thinking of picking up a nice laptop for a variety of purposes (mainly travel and gaming) and I've heard good things about this Asus G1.  Has anyone had any experience with one?

Looks like pretty decent specs for a laptop. You might want to poke around at the deal sites though before buying one - you might find a more powerful Dell laptop on sale for less.

Couldn't find any Dells with everything I wanted for a lesser price, but I did find this Toshiba Satellite for about the same price but with a better nVidia card (less onboard memory but it runs better than the go 7700) and more importantly an ExpressCard slot so I could potentially use that external graphics card deal that Asus showed at CES (I believe it was called the XG Station).

Check out the deals on Dell stuff over at Got Apex.  They literally have deals posted for Dell every single day.

ASUS is a great company, however.  Never had anything from them which required a complaint.

I have to get a laptop, and I'd prefer a Dell.  I like the specs of the M1710.  The problem is, my wife is not going to like the way the XPS machines look, but I want to get the 512MB Nvidia card in there (the 7950)  The Inspirons only have a 256MB 7300.  I'm looking to get a new desktop down the road, so this doesn't have to be a powerhouse, but I do want it to run things like Company of Heroes okay.  Any suggestions?

I just ordered a new laptop myself.  Since I won't be gaming on it I went with the HP DV2000t.

You probably already know about this site, but here it is just in case.

Absolute best site for laptop information and reviews.

The build quality of Asus is superior to Dell

This signature is intentional, ie not a mistake.  If you thing Rick Perry should be forced to resign for this crap, you're part of the problem with our country.  Give me a freaking break.
