Just today as Im downloading a video of ODST I hear a very low buzzz click click....buuzzzzzzzz click click. The video is taking forever and finally Firefox stops responding. I reboot and the same thing happens. I stop the video and reopen Firefox and it seems ok though I still hear that sound. Then it gets louder...buzzzzzz click click....buzzzzz click click....finally FF fails again. I close and reopen. the sound is gone....for about 2 min...now its doing it again....Im getting pauses in my computer..at least in browsing. Its on then off then a bit later buzzzz click click. its like a file is trying to run but fails.

Is my hard drive on it's last legs? I swore not to buy another WD drive after my first one head crashed but I did. Now its doing this.

Was afraid of that. I just now copied over all my saves for KOTOR 2 to my thumb drive. Glad I bought a good sized one of those. Im not sure what else to copy over though. My photos and all such stuff are on an external 500 gig drive. This drive is mainly my OS and all that is and my games. I cant afford a new drive right now..and Id want to just go to Win 7 if I start over anyways. I think I bought this drive from someone on here or OO frown So now warranty I dont think.

Shouldn't matter, it's typically X years from date of manufacture regardless of ownership from what I've seen. You should be able to check on their website if it is still under warranty or not, I found the process with Western Digital to be very simple and painless when I had one of theirs go south.

Ahh didn't know that. I'll have to open my system up and see what model it is unless theres some way to find out with software.

Good news and bad news. Good news is my WD checks out fine. Bad news is after checking closer its my 500gig external Maxtor that I use as backup for everything thats dying. Im trying to save my photos now. I hope MAxtor will support it because I got it from a member here or OO also lol. Damn Maxtor. Its forewire too and I cant seem to get Maxtor's test app to work an anything other than internal drives..nothing external will work with it.

if it is the external backup that is dying would it affect running other stuff like you mentioned in the original post?

You wouldn't think so but when it does it's little buzzzz click click..which is worse now..it freezes up my system for a few seconds. If Im playing my game then my characters pause or become erratic.

Ive held the drive up and its definately that one thats screwing up though. Right now its not making a sound...then it will just do it. Shrug.

So you will no longer buy Western Digital, Seagate or Maxtor? I'd buy a pad and paper then. I guess there's always Fujitsu

Lol nah Ill stick to WD. I just realized why its affecting my whole system. When I got back from town Impulse had died and my system was saying I had lost data due to not being able to write to my TEMP folder. I changed my temp folder to that drive earlier this year. Since its failing and cant get tmp files written to it thats what clogging up the whole thing. trying to find how to change it to my other drive now.

That's interesting. I did everything for my WD on their site or through email, haven't had any other brand for a number of years now... seems like a pretty good choice in hindsight.

Good luck!

It was the Maxtor. It died. Before I got everything off it. I had to change my temp dir and actually remove it before my system would boot.

Long cables, put it in the freezer. Ziploc bag to keep the moisture out if you have lots of vapor, etc. Good luck. Let it get nice and cold before you start it up. And get the data off asap, if it does manage to revive.

Atomic

PS: I personally prefer western digital anymore myself. Simple truth is, all of them have to put out decent product in order to survive, long term. But WD seems more 'performance user' oriented with their Black series, and the Velociraptors, etc. The plus side of the equation, is that they don't have a scsi based enterprise business unit, to 'protect' by keeping those drives with superior warranties, workmanship, etc. Most of the others were infamous for a long time, because their IDE drives just weren't 'as good' as their scsi manufactured units...

Funny you mention freezer because that drive was HOT. Its been running 24/7 like all my computer for about 2 years. Ill try that freezer thing.

Well the freezer trick may or may not work. Ive had it in there all day and its frozen solid. I started it tranferring files just now and its working. But there are over 130 gigs of files and its time estimate is 130 minutes so I doubt it will last that long smile

Just keep chugging on it smile the drop in temp may keep it cool enough that technically you can leave it running. But it's already failed once... send it on to drive heaven, and be safe.

What did you decide to replace it with?

Some stuff its tranferring and some Im getting a crc error.

For now Im not going to replace it. In the future Ill add an internal one. Maybe a 1tb one just for storage. It will be a WD ...black or green. thinking green since its just storage.

Ok froze it again. Left it in there 2 days. But this time I could not get it to show anything..it just kept saying it was unformatted...so I formatted it. I can look in it now..empty of course..not making any noise. Not sure what to do now. Im afraid to put anything on it..then again its kinda pointless not to test it out by sticking something on it. Guess Ill put some m,p3s on it and see how that goes.

The drive already went through the 'click of death' - just toss that sucker out.
