Just got an iPhone 3g and was wondering if there was a way to put music onto it other than having to buy off of iTunes?

You said buy off itunes. Just to be clear you can load any compatible music (mp3 included) into itunes to sync to your ipod/iphone without buying anything off itunes.

Thanks that is actually what I was asking yeah, if you buy from Amazon or even eMusic (I think, can't remember about eMusic) their downloaders will automagically put the songs into iTunes.

Yes. Quite easily too Yup, iTunes will do all that pretty much automagically for you. Only time I have to help it out is when it can't find the album art.

The music on my iPhone is 90% ripped from my CDs and 10% purchased MP3s from Amazon. Not a drop of music DRM on my iPhone (or PC).

Yes. Quite easily too Yup, iTunes will do all that pretty much automagically for you. Only time I have to help it out is when it can't find the album art. ...and that generally happens if the tags are wrong or if they don't have any record of that album in iTunes.

Not sure what others do, but I end up on Amazon and download a cover image from there, then import it into iTunes for the songs.

I believe the iTunes ripper defaults to AAC format but you can just go into options to have it rip mp3s. You can also use a 3rd party ripper of your choice and just point iTunes to the directory.
