Dual monitor problems

I have a Samsung 24 inch backlit LED as my main monitor and a 19 inch Viewsonic LCD monitor hooked up to my XFX Radeon 6970 video card. The samsung is hooked up via hdmi, and the viewsonic is hooked up by DVI.
My Samsung looks fine and is set at 1920x1080 while my viewsonic is giving me problems. When I extend the desktop to the viewsonic the resolution is greyed out at 640x480 with no option to change it.
I've tried plugging the viewsonic in a the 2nd DVI port and still have the problem. I just reformatted my PC last night and that didn't fix it either. I have the most up to date driver for the card. I looked at viewsonic's website for a driver and they just have a generic one for out of production monitors.
Any ideas?

Are you in standard dual monitor mode, not eyefinity or something?
Not super familiar with AMD stuff, but with Nvidia there are a ton of options now because of Surround and not all of them can be configured all different ways.

I believe I'm in standard mode. How do I tell?

You can't use HDMI and DVI at the same time. I have a 6870 and ran into the same problem. Goes away as soon as you use the DVI to VGA converter that should have come with the card.

I had an entirely different problem today after I switched one of my two monitors out. I bought a 120hz monitor for my main, and kept one of my previous two as my secondary monitor. I had the new 120hz monitor on a standard Dual-Link DVI cable, and the secondary monitor on a DVI->HDMI cable. With that setup and the main monitor actually set to 120hz in windows I got stuttering whenever I watched video or played a game.
Switching the second monitor to a straight up DVI cable eliminated it.
Lots of weirdness with AMD cards and dual monitor stuff.
