I can play DVD's from a machine with a DVD drive. How can I access regular cable ? Overtstock has "Internal PCI TV Tuner Video Capture with Remote" that seems to do the job. Any problems with that? Any good reason you can't quickly turn your pc into a Tivo like unit with a bit of home hacking?

I posted on the other forum, but i'll answer differently here....

Using a Celeron 1.2mhz machine, I installed an ATI VE card in a PCI slot.

This card does double duty as a video card, and multimedia card.

I fed my cable into the cards' connector, and recorded shows to the hard drive just like using a VCR.

These movie files quickly used up space though, especially at higher quality settings.

Also, I could only record the show that the cable box channel was on at the time.
I did have a timer though.

I then bought long RCA cables, and fed the show/movie from the computer to my TV for watching in the livingroom

It worked well as a VCR, but not as a TIVO.
