Cat5 or NIC issue ?
«

Brought an old desktop out of retirement for my wife yesterday and the wired connection in Vista says 'limited connection'
I cannot seem to get an external connection on it. I made sure that i had good physical connections at both the router and the NIC but still nothing.
Ipconfig shows that the wirelss card has an IP but the NIC has the default 169 address or something.
Any thoughts? The connection that i am plugged into was being used for the xbox360 before we moved it to the rec room so i know that it was working at one time.
Driver issue perhaps?

Did you double check the properties and make sure it's either using DHCP or has a valid static IP in it? I've seen that before where an old computer has an invalid IP in place. Probably not since the 169 indicates it doesn't have a valid DHCP server to get an address from but something to check anyway. Also, ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew (like above). And, try changing the Cat5 cable with a known working one...at least you can rule out the cable if it does the same thing. Do you have a light on the NIC and a light on the switch indicating connection?

finally got back to this challenge last night and low and behold the challenge was no longer there. The wired NIC connection was online and had access to both internal and external networks.
Gotta love windows
