I could have sworn a while back I saw some type of hardware device that allowed you to be on a dialup connection and still use your phone whenever you wanted, without having to disconnect from the internet. (Similiar to DSL.)

Unfortunately it looks like I may have to be on dialup for a few months until I can afford DSL again but don't want the hassle of the 'busy signal' like in the stone ages when we all used dialup connections. Honestly I don't know what it's going to be like.. I'm used to downloading huge patches (100mb), demos, games, movies, and so on.. all well over 100mb files. Can you imagine the horrors of 56k?
Anyway let me not give myself nightmares!

Is there at least a way you can do dialup connection and keep your phone line free at the same time? A hardware device, maybe?

I don't know if there is a way to keep the line free all the time, other than getting another line. If your isp supports V.92, then the modem on hold feature might possibly work for you. If your phone rings, the connection is put on hold for, I believe, up to 5 minutes. If you end the call within that amount of time, your connection should still be active. I don't know how this works with downloading, though.

I've heard of something like that before. Unfortunately it woudn't work too well for me though. I could have sworn I saw a hardware device (whether it was one of those late night tv commercials or some internet ad) that let you plug in both the house phone line - and the modem phone line - into it, and it made both of them available so that you could be online and talk at the same time, just like DSL.
Tried some internet searches but sadly I can't think of what something like that would be called so I used phrases like "56k and keeping phone line free" and a few others. No luck.

Any other ideas out there? Surely one of you ex-GG's born to be CG's knows of something like this! Our lovely government terminated me from my law enforcement job due to "resizing" and so I'm on a tight budget now and keep my DSL anymore. Access4less.net has internet for $5.99 a month.. so that will have to work until I get a new job.
Just don't want to keep our phone line tied up being on a dialup.. although maybe it's the only way now unless we can find out what the hell that hardware device was!

I talked with someone that used one of those things and he said you could answer the phone and see if it was a call you wanted to take.  If you hung up quick enough you would not get dicsonnected but if you stayed on the phone you lost the internet conenction.

Thanks drifter, if that is indeed the hardware I was thinking of. Better off going without it though if that's all it does. It's not like the world comes to an end if you're online and someone calls and disconnects you (unless you're downloading the latest jenna jameson's movie without a download resume program..) I'll have to figure something out soon though as I'm cancelling Comcast and going to access4less.net. $6 a month is hard to beat.
