Every time a new version of iTunes comes out, my Windows 7 taskbar shortcut disappears or becomes a dead link. I am mildly inconvenienced by having to drag the new iTunes shortcut onto the bar. Is there something that I can do to prevent it from getting killed by new version releases?

you could always right click and select 'pin to taskbar' instead of dragging

Then it won't go to the spot I want it, and I will still be mildly inconvenienced.

I figured, just messin' with ya just had a thought though: what if you make your own shortcut to iTunes.exe? the .exe should always be in the same location, and whatever iTunes does to its own shortcut during an update might not roll over to a shortcut you created.

Good idea, but I gave it a shot and it didn't work. I think the handmade shortcut ends up being exactly the same as the 'pin to taskbar' built one.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's a thing that you can do about it. There is apparently something weird about the way iTunes updates itself that breaks the taskbar link every time. It doesn't matter if you created the link manually or used the 'Pin to Taskbar' option. Either way, every time you get an update, you have to remove the old link and create a new one despite the filename and location staying exactly the same. It's been a nuisance for at least a year now...really stupid thing to get wrong with the updates.

I just use one of the G keys on my Logitech G110 as a hotkey to launch it now, no shortcut required. it's not a solution for everyone though.

I was responding as if you meant your keyboard was the solution you were recommending, rather than just the idea of a programmable keyboard. [80s laughtrack] oh cousin larry, where I come up with them?

Interesting... I've had the exact same problem forever but "recently" it stopped happening and my shortcut now survives iTunes upgrades. Not positive as to the when or the version when it happened but I was pleasently surprised. Thought perhaps they fixed it. Guesss not.
