My daughter has infected my wife's laptop with the av security suite virus. Help?

That's the main reason I left AVG and Avast as I caught several viruses, including a similar Vista Antivirus 2012 program. Every time I tried to run an antivirus program it would block it.
I used a fake key code I got online to enter into the program (since it's really wanting you to pay for it) which will trick the program into thinking you paid and allow normal computer use (but it's still there) - and then I ran TDSSKiller (also from kaspersky - free program) and Anti Malware (free) which both found traces of it and deleted. I did a quick google search for a fake key but didn't find anything, unfortunately don't have anymore time as I'm about to head out, but if it's anything like the Vista 2012 one I got twice, there's probably a fake key out there for it so you can run other programs to get rid of it.

I switched to Ashampoo Anti-Malware (they have a free version out) which includes anti malware and anti virus, which has worked 200x better than AVG or Avast. Ashampoo has stopped several trojans in real-time so far and doing a full scan it picked up other stuff that AVG and Avast let slip by undetected.

I got something very similar (maybe the same virus) while running Microsoft SE (it may have been out of date).

I was able to remove the virus but it left behind a rootkit I couldn't detect or kill.  In the end I just backed up key data and nuked the whole computer (secure erase on the SSDs).  After I got it up and running again with a fresh W7 SP1 install security essentials did pick up the bug buried in some of my backup files.  I guess the lesson is make sure you install the latest OS patches and AV updates.

This virus and its variants have been running rampant the last couple of months.  I have caught it and also removed it from 3 other systems since Christams.   You are picking it up from infected websites most likely.  Anyhow, it makes changes to your registry which cause any program your try to open to run the virus instead. 

Here's the key you can use http://www.fixrogues.com/vista-security-2012-removal-guide.  Entering it will temporarily free you up to run other programs including virus removal stuff.  Also, I was able to right click and run as admin in lieu of using the above code on some of the systems I fixed.  Your registry may or may not still be hosed after removal, I hit %50 on that.  Here is the registry fix to run after removal.
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/reg/FixNCR.reg.  After it is removed and you have run scans from different antvirus/malware then run Ccleaner to clean up your registry.  http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner


That should knock it completely out.
