Started off as reminescing about old times with some co-workers...

Then we all got a theme deck from the 10th edition.

And now we're buying booster after booster.  Addictive game, my GOD!

I've tried pretty much even color, but I've found a nice balance with green/red.  My friend plays blue/white and whoops me every time.  F'n Serra Angel  crybaby

Anyone else play?

I used to back around 3rd edition but I got out for the sake of my wallet.

and I loved the Serra Angels.  They were a magnificient part of my all white Tower of Power 100+ card deck that actually worked surprisingly well.

I did for a time but got out of it due to the fact that my wallet just couldn't take it anymore.

I have a slew of cards from around 3rd Edition to 5th (and a bunch of sets all over the place, including some from the 'fabled' Legends series, among other things), but haven't played in years.

For that matter, I wonder where my cards are...

when I got out I went cold turkey and sold my cards as soon as possible.  If I checked now I'd probably regret it, but I had a nice mix of Legends, Arabian Nights and Antiquities.

OMFG TML!

I dabbled in it when it was big like 12 years ago or so.  I used to love the game Microprose put out, Duel of the Plainswalker or something.

I liked green best, but always went crazy with multi-colored decks.  I had some of those dual lands that were cool along with mana artifacts.

If I were nearby I'd nerd up and join you.  It can't be as expensive as it used to be?  Probably even worse...

Still have all my old cards somewhere!

I had 4 of each of the dual lands which made up an 80 card 5 color deck.  It was pretty hit or miss as to whether it worked or not, but most people were in awe that I had all of them.

Taiga and Volcanic Island I remember.

Ah, I remember trying to make a Goblin deck with the one set that had a ton of goblin stuff.

Badlands, Tropical Island, Underworld Sea, Plateau and Savannah are the only other original ones I can recall.  Man, just talking about them give me an itch to play again.  Luckily no one carries the cards around here.

I agree.  It was a fun game.  The one thing I always felt is that it just got too big.  Too many cards.  Now that is obviously good for the maker, and it does keep it fresh, but as a normal person on a budget it just seemed hard to keep up with it all.  There were some really crazy cards coming out when I left, I think Ice Age had hit then.  I remember when the Legends and those dual-colored Legendary characters came out and they were very rare.

I was buying the art books when they used to come out.  Basically just catalogs of the cards and art.  I still stumble upon some new cards online and I always read them, but there are a ton of new rules that I just don't understand.  Still, the art is fun and I always think back to playing the game and imagining strategies for the newer stuff.

Gaia's Liege was epic!

i sadly know more about magic than most here, based on my friends being nearly professional about thier playing.

So I can tell you about how most new mechanics work and about sets.  But I used to play back when it was like 2nd edition, tops.  Mainly playing beginning magic and ice age.  I played a  little mirroden block and champions block and the new block, but not as much me spending money as people paying for me to draft with them, rare draft and just have someone competent at the table to give them a decent chance of winning the packs.

What kills me is it used ot be such a simple, yet complex game.  Every card more or less was "This card does this one thing."

now every card has 2 - 3 things it does and all have different mechanics and combinations to make them amazingly effective.

I guess the best way to explain it is....

This card is a counterspell, and a creature that pumps based on your counter.. That flies.

The only reason this isn't the bread and butter of decks today is because it's too expensive.  If it was 4 mana, it would be the staple of every deck running.  Decks today are all about mana cost and speed.

But a normal old school blue card would have flying, and maybe tap to do a point of damage.  Thats it.

Still, it does create very interesting decks in casual play.  So if any of you want deck ideas or cards you should be using, ask away, i'm bored.

do they still allow 4 mana flares and ornithopters w/ firebreathing?  those were the cheese decks back in the day- chances were your opponent would end up with mana burn whenever he cast a spell.

ah, good old Tim.

actually he was kind of a bastard.  Unless you cast Holy Light.  -1/-1 to all non-white creatures really caused chaos on the cheese monster deck.

then again most of the games I played had the rule of no direct damage to the other player while he had creatures in play.  really cut down on the cheese.

prodigial (sp?) Sorcerer FTW.  God, I miss playing that game.  I used to be a judge and helped out at a New Orleans tournament while I lived in Texas.  You don't understand how many memories are attached to that game.   crybaby

Due to some folks at the local gaming shop I've recently found Magic after a long history of turning my nose up at it. At the moment I have no finished armies for the games people are playing, so I picked up a couple of the Tenth Edition starters to learn the game. A few boxes of boosters later, and I'm having a grand ol' time making decks and trying them out.

I'm very much looking forward to the Lorwyn block, even if the swamps are too damn happy. What can I say, I like playing tribes.

In fact, I only run mono-color decks at the moment with my Green and Black being the strongest of the bunch. Have lotsa fun with those.

There are those that take it too seriously, just like any hobby, but I no longer think everyone who plays is a socially retarded misfit. Dammit, it's a fun game.

And it's super ultra annoying.

I'm so noobish, though, is I just realized that a -1/-1 enchantment would get rid of it.

Still though, cool card.

I'll never go back- I'm too lazy to learn all the new fangled rules they got these days.
You mean like this?
wow, a new card type?  why, back in the day we got by with the 5 colors, lands and artifacts just fine.

You kids with your newfound abilities that are obscure and...whoa, that's powerful.

*get off my lawn!*

Ping? It was always poke.

It might be a regional thing, like Pop, Soda and Coke.

Was definitely ping where I am as well.  Poking was done with a creature smacking you, pinging was DD.
