Settlers of Catan 2 player?

I've wanted to pick up The Settlers of Catan recently, but chances are that I will rarely have 3-4 people (as suggested on the box) together to play.  However, playing with 2 people could happen frequently. 

Is it possible and/or good to play with 2 people or are 3-4 really needed?

The Catan Card Game is your best bet if you want to play with two people.  Not as good as the real thing, but it's a pretty fun abstraction.

Ooh.  I found a free Linux version called Pioneers.  I'm going to check that out.
