So, I'm having fun painting my miniatures. I've finally gotten the head, hands, and feet of the genestealers all painted up. I enjoy learning how to do the different techniques, like drybrushing and washing. The acrylic paints are definitely better than the Testor's enamel paints I used to use when painting model planes. Easier to clean up afterwards as well.

Ooooh, I just found out about the "toothbrush trick" to get painted blood splatter on the models. I want to try that on one or two of the genestealers. And maybe on the marine holding the genestealer head and spine.

I have a copy of the game but I haven't opened it yet.  I haven't painted minatures ever and I don't think I have the time or patience to paint these minis.  It's amazing what some people have done with these figures.  Unfortunately I don't think I have that much creativity either.

Here's a nice happy example of using the toothbrush (not toothpick) to get a splatter effect:

Substitute blood red for the raindrop blue and paint over the minis for some gory goodness. Like this example from boardgamegeek:

I've been painting them in an assembly line fashion, starting with the easiest paint jobs and then moving on to other, newer techniques (newer to me anyway, as I've only painted up/down, side-to-side, breath in/breath out). I started w/ the genestealer heads, because they were the biggest target. Then I moved on to hands and feet and then to the carapace, learning how to do drybrushing and washing.

Haven't done the space marines yet since they seem to have a lot more details to paint.

I picked up a small pack of Space Marines to practice on.  I painted two and them, and not I have one of the terminators almost done.  I'm having fun doing it, but it definitely is slow going.

Whew. Finally done painting my Space Hulk figures. I realize now that there is this trap of adding "just one more detail" as I kept learning more and more techniques. Its like an uncanny valley effect where I have to add more detail otherwise it doesn't look right. Anyway, I managed to break out of it in time to clean up the garage to let me park there before it really got cold.

This is the full set of pics.

Hmmm, okay its late and I can't really figure out how to post the flickr images in here. If anyone knows how, please let me know. I'll try again tomorrow morning.

[modified the text for the link. I didn't mean to imply that these were pics of the entire set of figures smile]

Whew! Finally figured out how to share them. Here are a few:

Hey thanks smile

I have to say, the Quick Shade Army Painter stuff really brings out a lot of the detail. And it added some extras "for free", such as the grimey look of the Brood Lord's claws, especially at the base where the claws meet the foot.

One thing I noticed initially when using the Quick Shade stuff is that the effect looks really goopy if you don't brush off the excess as much as possible. I noticed it pooling around the feet of the Space Marines as well, which made them look like they were wading through ichor. So I had to brush that excess off in addition to the stuff that would pool along the bottom of the weapons.

Eventually my process boiled down to dipping the upper 1/3 of the marines into the can, shaking off the excess, and then turning them right side up and brushing the goop down towards the base. Even then there was still some excess goopage. It was still quicker than painting the dip on via brush.

Just an FYI for people out there interested in this game, I noticed Games Workshop has it back in stock now.  It was originally an limited run, but so who knows how long it will be around for.

One of my concerns after painting all the miniatures was how to store them in the box such that they don't get damaged by everything else, especially the heavy cardboard tiles. I was considering going to an arts and crafts store to get foam which I could then hollow out and put the figures in.

I had recently bought a used copy of the Rock Band Stage Kit and in a moment of serendipity saw that the foam used for packaging the stage kit was just the right size to fit snugly in the box and store my figures:

Thanks! I did the easy stuff first - like the big claws and the heads. The genestealers were a little easier to paint so I started on those guys. Then I learned drybrushing on their spines and the bony hand parts. The "dip" in the "paint and dip" method really accentuates the little details though. I don't know if I could get my minis to look as good via just painting.

Man, I want this game.. I've been reading about it on BGG.

I hear it's quite limited in release.. I just have a hard time justifying 100 bucks for a game.

It was originally billed as being in very short supply, which is why I grabbed mine ASAP.

However, I was just in the game store near my office and they've got at least four copies sitting on the racks, so who knows how limited it actually was?

It's also still available on the gamesworkshop website.

Raydude, what do you use to paint your minis?  The standard Gamesworkshop paints or another brand?  I'm getting back into painting my Necrons, but the GWS paints are so expensive it seems.

My FLGS has one in stock.. I'm going to get it at lunch  crybaby

What kind of glue can I use to put the miniatures together.. will standard model glue work?  I don't want to get suckered into buying some insane Games Workshop glue or something.. I don't even know if I'm going to paint them yet.

You can probably buy a small bottle of zap-a-gap at the hobby store.

I used the gamesworkshop paints. I know they're hella expensive, so I bought one of those paint kits that had 6 colors in it. Then I mixed the colors myself. Like silver and black to get a metallic black gun color. And blue, white, and red to get a purplish color for the genestealers. The kit also came with a gamesworkshop brush that became my go-to brush for the fine detail work and a color wheel that came in handy for color mixing.  The rest of the brushes were generic quality stuff that I got in a pack from Michael's.

I also just used superglue to glue the minis together.

Ok, I finally got my minatures together.  The Genestealers were easy, but I broke 3 of the posts on the space marines where the arms go on.  I was pissed, but I should be able to glue them on.

What the hell is everyone using to store these things?  I don't want to spend 20 bucks on that foam, is their something more DIY?

I'm doing this.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/4470095#4470095

I can get those boxes at my local staples, and I have a few plano boxes at home (they are great).

EDIT

Finally got to play this thing last night with a buddy.  We played 2 games of the first mission SUICIDE MISSION.  What a great game, although that mission seems like it is impossible for the Space Marines to win.
