Pirates card game questions

Has anyone here had any experiencing the Pirates of the Spanish Main card game (or any of the expansion packs)? I'm a fan of all things pirate-y, so I bought a couple packs to play the game with my wife. She's lees then enthused, unfortunately.

Is this a hard game to figure out? Do you need to buy a ton of packs, or are you good with just a few? I'm seeing if I should convince her to try a game or two out, or of I should just abandon this idea entirely.

No, it's a super easy game to learn and the mechanics are really simple.  Almost to a fault.  I'd say you could get by with one or two packs each to get a fair selection.

Personally I was pretty disappointed.  They have those really nice looking ships and such simple rules seem like such a waste, but I know a lot of people enjoy the fact that it's more of a beer and pretzels game.
