Wizards of the Coast announced today that Dark Sun is coming back in 2010 as an official game setting for D&D 4th Edition, and they're trying to recapture the magic of Dark Sun 1st Edition (the second edition was less liked by fans). I don't know about you guys, but I'm excited! Dark Sun is a really unique setting with a very gritty tone that is unusual for WotC. Metal is extremely rare, wizards destroy nature by using magic, the gods are dead or gone, pretty much everyone has some kind of psionic capability, and the war between good and evil is over. The bad guys won.

Holy crap.
While I never played in the universe, I did know about it from the games way, WAY back when.

I never got to play in the universe in the pen and paper variety, however I remember having a dark sun gold box game back in the day and loved it.
I also really enjoyed Ravenloft.

That is great news. Hopefully this will spur on more books (novels) - which means more psionics, which means a happy LD. A halfling with psionics? Does it even GET any better than that?!

I find your lack of respect for the Halfling race troublesome, sir. I fart in your general direction

A halfling roasting over an open fire? I thought I read something on the official D&D forums about roving packs of cannibalism Halfings in Dark Sun...

I have great respect for halflings... they are considered a delicacy in my culture... how much more respect could you ask for? It isn't like I said anything mean like... oh I don't know a paralyzed halfling toilet paper holder, or a mentally dominated halfling back scrubber/scratcher.

I loved the Dark Sun pc games. In fact i liked them more than Ultima. The setting was what really drew me to them. I still remember starting out as a gladiator in the arena.

Loved the Dark Sun books and PC game. Not really interested in the D&D campaign, but hopefully it will spawn more DS stuff.

+1. Was wondering why they decided to reprint the Troy Denning "Prism Pentad" DS series. Great stuff.

I'm excited. I just hope it's earlier in 2k10 than later.

Well... PHB3 needs to be released first (Dark Sun relies heavily on material from it, considering it uses psionics), so it can't be any earlier than that at least. My money is on late 2010.

So in prep, I went to pull out my dark sun books from the boxes of books I still had from when I moved four years ago.
The complete "Chronicles of Athas" five book set? Check The "Tribe of One" book trilogy? Check Missing one of the five books from "Prism Pentad? Check. The first book being the one that is missing? Check and mate.
At least it's been reprinted so it can be purchased again, but still..... sad. face.

I've been looking for those DS books for a while now. I keep scoping out the local used place but nothing yet. I did see they re-released some of them in a bigger format but ouch on the price. I also want to read the Spelljammer and the Planescape ones.

I'd like to point out that halflings make a great replacement for chewing tobacco... Atomic
