My son is thinking about buying DarkBASIC.  He's tried RealityFactory but version 076 is buggy and after two nights in their forum, we can't get it to run.  Before that he was using Game Maker but its 2D and he's gone as far as he can with that.  He's also tried Silent Walk but its too simple.

Is DarkBASIC good game making software?  Is the Pro version worth the $60 over Basic at $30?  Is there anything else out there we should be looking at?  In advance, thanks.

UPDATE...I had a hunch this was too narrow a topic but I thought I'd try.  We grabbed the full pro version plus a book on DarkBasic off of Amazon and this looks like a winner.  It's a nice step up for game making from the software he'd been using.  Sometimes, you take a risk and it works out.   thumbsup

I own both DB and DBPro and I can say both are excellent for what they do. If your son wants to learn, or program at a hobbyist level, DBPro will be both fun AND a great learning experience. Like all systems it has its flaws though and getting past it's bottlenecks and creating a commercial product is possible, but very challenging.

Man I'll never forget the first time I stayed up all night experimenting with DB. I made a 3D boat on moving waves that you could drive around. It was inspiring!  icon_smile
