see attached; the quotes are not hyperlinks anymore. does this in both IE 9 and Firefox 15.0.1. on iPhone Safari it was putting whoever was quoted's avatar in the 'quote from' section, but a simple reboot of the iPhone seems to have fixed it for now.

Actually, the load order is screwing with the New Post functionality. I hit the link, it loads the page to the appropriate post, then all the load-ins push that post down off the screen and I have to scroll down to find where I left off.

Count me as one who is not a fan of the new link embeds at all. I always middle click on links to open them up in a new tab and that doesn't work on these new fangled links. Not to mention I don't want to see a giant preview of every link we have.

While i really like the new info boxes/embedded stuff There is a link quoted from 'Grim in the Obsidian Kickstarter thread that i was using to check on the Obsidian total, now when i click on the link in the quote(entitled 'kickstarter'),it just scrolls the page down a little to the video because the kickstarter link contains a video, but it's not the video i want to check out this is the post i mean http://gamingtrend.com/forums/console-gaming/obsidian-countdown/msg880127/#msg880127It does have a kickstarter link underneath the embedded video but that goes to the Home page of Kickstarter and not the Obsidian kickstarter,i can live with it because that home page currently has most popular kickstarters on their homepage but i can see it being a problem later on in other subjects if a link gets put up but it has a video in the link, when the video isn't the important part do you follow what i mean?,because i lost myself in the first paragraph

I like it.
Really messes up the Random Youtube Links thread load-wise, though... Not sure how to fix that.
On a separate note, is there a way to make clicking on an embed open a new page? I've already found that I click, it takes me somewhere and I instinctively close the tab when I'm done.

So, this is an experiment. UX research has been pretty positive about the effect of link embeds such as this. They definitely come across as more compelling, and being able to watch a video directly sure is nice. Things like the load order issues and such are a pain, but I may strip this out by the time the experiment is over.
To be frank, we're working on a complete overhaul of the forum situation and things are going to change rather dramatically soon. A final link embed solution will likely work better than the one I've implemented here.

Here's an example from the xkcd thread of how annoyingly busy it can make a post. What it would have looked like before: Why are 11s11e, 11s11w, 11n11w and 11n11e completely blank? The S ones are black, and the N ones are white. A rudimentary steganalysis reveals nothing. (Before anyone asks, the images exist, and it isn't just being filled in)
I've hardly ever seen Randall add blank images for no reason, and the coordinates are oddly specific.
hllp://imgs.xkcd.com/clickdrag/11n11e.png hllp://imgs.xkcd.com/clickdrag/11n11w.png hllp://imgs.xkcd.com/clickdrag/11s11e.png hllp://imgs.xkcd.com/clickdrag/11s11w.png And what it looks like now:

Yeah, I saw that. There's a crucial piece of functionality missing with this method of using embed.ly and that is the 'don't include a link preview' capability.
It's a great addition for some links, but it gets wonky for others. I'm using the 'anywhere' method for this experiment, but a final solution in the new forum software lies in the API.
Hang in there, guys! I'm getting good data here.

One other thing I just noticed is that it hijacks the posted link. I was trying to hit the Torchlight II review link, and it just scrolled me down to the preview window so that I had to click on the link that it generated inside it. It kind of misses the point of it being a link in the first place.

Is retaining that as a link a must-have feature for anybody? Removing it seemed like not a big deal
If you're talking about the hyperlink in the "quote" text, I've used it on numerous occasions (particularly when PMing), so I'd consider it must-have for me. Not a fan of the link embeds for EVERYTHING, either. For instance, when I originally made this post, when it reloaded the thread page, it didn't send me to this post; it sent me to Wonderpug's multiple embed post, which is pretty annoying.

I'm all for YouTube embeds, but not at this cost. It's literally bad enough that if I know a thread will have it, I just won't click on that thread.

I can't say I'm overly fond of this stuff. When I post something, I expect to have full control over what appears in it. With this, control is taken away from me and the contents of my posts depend entirely upon the link's ability to format its content properly. Not to mention that this stuff will discourage people from writing about the links they post since the link itself will do it for them.

I don't suppose there's a way to have things embedlied only if they're marked with [embed]some kind of embedly brackets?[/embed] That way they'll only appear when people explicitly want them to appear.

Ok, you may have noticed that the embeds are gone Thanks for all of the feedback, guys! Some key notes coming out of this for the future API-centric implementation on the upcoming forum overhaul: - Automatic embed only on first post of a thread- this should cut down on noise a bit and also prevent us from exceeding the monthly rate limit (which we were close to in less than a week)
- User ability to opt out of link embedding on their thread-starting post, as well as opt in for links in a response to post
- Add preview the link embed before publish post
- Restrict what kind of links use the embed function- Basically so we can avoid recursive forum links and anything that doesn't format well
- original link should not be overridden by the embed
Load order will likely be less of an issue if we use the API, but only testing will provide that answer. You guys won't see any of this for a while, though, as it's further down the priority list for the forum overhaul project.

The quote-hyperlink can be especially valuable when someone has cited a few lines out of a particularly long post, or is quoting someone on a previous page, or even from a different thread altogether. It's always been extremely convenient to just click on the text and go directly to the original source. I don't know what backend benefit there might be to eliminating the links, but I'm much rather have them in place. -Autistic Angel

The quote links would be super duper awesome to have back. I love them and think they're nifty, but I don't love or hold as high an opinion of niftyness about quote links as I do about Gaming Trend, Knightshade Dragon, and all the immense amount of time and money and sweat and other things similar but not limited to time and money and sweat he and his crew put into it. If there's one thing I want, it's more opportunities to tell Knightshade he's awesome and he has beautiful facial features. If there's two, it's that I really miss having quote links.
