This is probably something that pre-dates my arrival here, but I'm curious why the main site seems more or less like a totally disconnected place from the forums?  There's always a bunch of interesting articles there, but little to no discussion on them.  I only recognize a couple of the names of the writers (maybe I just don't know their forum names?).  On other sites it seems like the main page articles directly spawn conversations on the forums, whereas here only occasionally does someone link to a review, again almost like an external site.

Seems like there's some natural synergy to take advantage of to liven up both places?

Sorry is this a taboo topic lol?  I'll shut up if it's not welcome and stick to talking about TV shows that no one else watches.  ninja

I was just reading the preview on Gigantic, and was planning on making a comment about it in the forum thread, but I had to find a 2+ year old topic to do so.  eek

Haha, not a taboo topic, just one that has been talked about around here many times for the last several years.  (and probably even more times in private or the moderator forum).

Essentially, the forums and the front page grew from different audiences, for different purposes, and since there was nothing tying them together a small animosity developed on both sides of the equation.  The frontpage had been created and run from a source of voluntary love, being more of a financial burden than anything.  The forums grew largely from half of the audience from the old Gone Gold site when that closed down and GT was still Console Gold.

There are certainly things that could be done to cross pollinate, but in the past most small posts that come from front page contributors in bursts at times tend to annoy forumites because they don't follow standard forum etiquette of contributing more than just a link and not creating new threads when a discussion already exists in a dedicated thread.

There is also often a backend change "just around the corner", coming with the next update, next forum software, next redesign, next plan, or whatever that will try to tie them together with forum logins being used on the front page and vice versa.  But I think it just never happens because it's a lot of work and there isn't enough dedicated time/money/people to do that sort of thing for what is currently two very divergent audiences.

In the end, it might be worth it in the end to benefit both sides, but there is nobody to drive it to completion.

It's a huge effort, and there are a few huge efforts that have to happen before it can get done. For instance this forum software needs to GO, and that's a HUGE thing to push it over to something new. We know exactly what we want to do, but time, money, and life have all gotten in the way for some time.

It WILL get done eventually. Dammit.

And to correct the record, the focus of the site has ALWAYS been about providing news, reviews, etc. It has been FAR more than just a financial burden for some time (if anything, the forums have been more of a financial burden than the front page for the better part of the last decade). From the staff's point of view, we love the forum and the community here, but our focus is on the rest of the site. At this point we probably interact more with the communities on Facebook and Twitter. <shrug>

It is very likely that the changes we have in mind may not find favor with some of the original GG/CG folks from way back. I remember when we rebranded to Gaming Trend some forum-goers still had us pegged as a console only site and turned their nose up at the notion of us expanding our coverage (or at least turned their nose up at talking PC games in these forums).

The bottom line is, we will keep on doing what we're doing, and we still want more integration into the forums and eventually that will happen. In the meantime, we'd love it if you guys read our work and talked about it, but no matter how hard it is now or how easy we try to make it, that's still up to all of you smile

OK thanks for the explanation.  I guess it kind of makes sense to me on some level (given that I was an original GGer as well), but having been away for awhile and then coming in "late" to the original GT, I guess my perspective is slightly different.  I suppose I've always been a big fan of both the front page AND the forums (in GG as well), so I never fully accepted/comprehended the division.

Regardless of history, it just seems beneficial for everyone interested to sync things up.  There have been so many fantastic articles/reviews on the front page that just seemed to me 100% natural to spawn an interesting discussion in the forums, but it's enough of a hassle that I guess no one (including myself) does it.  In terms of the issues of annoying forum-goers, I'd say that's a pretty small price to pay at this point when there just isn't much activity regardless.  Maybe that's just my own impression though.
