No. For starters, it would seem pretty arbitrary to start banning people from one site, but not another. Why not start banning people who also post on Bovine Conspiracy? Or AVault. Or GameSpot, for that matter. Secondly, enacting such a policy would not discourage people from posting on OO; it would discourage them from posting here. The internet is like an endless marketplace where people are free to congregate any place they want to go, and if this site were to start instituting rules that made it easier for people to leave than to stay, I suspect they'd take the hint and start gathering at other less restrictive sites. The least harmful imaginable outcome would be a complete segregation of the two communities, and I honestly don't see what the supposed benefit from that would be. Some people might argue that forcibly separating the two communities would promote greater diversity, but anyone who doesn't feel that GamingTrend and Octopus Overlords already have distinct personalities probably hasn't spent enough time at each site. On the whole, banning crossposters seems like an idea that would do a lot more harm than good. I try to keep an open mind so it's probably possible to sway my opinion here, but the argument would need to be pretty persuasive. -Autistic Angel

Why would anyone do that? Thats just plain stupid. They are two independent boards, not a mirror of each other. I post on both a lot because not everyone uses both boards. if they did we could just close one. Silliness.

I find the practice annoying, but I don't think any disciplinary action should be taken since the two sites are independent.

Why did you make such a completely odd, unnecessary, inflammatory, and utterly non-sequitur post? This reads like an essay from an SAT book, totally lacking in hypothesis or introduction to make us understand what in the sam hell you are talking about.

While I have no idea what spurred this post, I have to say it's quite annoying. I can come here and see 10 new posts from Daehawk, and then I go to OO and see the exact same posts there. (Joking!! I don't really care, it kind of amuses me.)

Banning? No, just suspend them This is a great idea! +200 I think you're probably being ironic, but just in case: I think a suspension policy would have much the same effect as an outright ban. People come here because they enjoy hanging out with other members of the community, and any rule that would make them or their friends feel unwanted would infringe on the laid-back feeling of camaraderie that's worked so well this far. Why did you make such a completely odd, unnecessary, inflammatory, and utterly non-sequitur post? This reads like an essay from an SAT book, totally lacking in hypothesis or introduction to make us understand what in the sam hell you are talking about. So far, I feel like I posted a fairly well reasoned statement of support for the open user policies GamingTrend currently uses, and pretty much everybody agrees. As far as inflammatory posts go, I really think this one ranks pretty low on the controversy scale. -Autistic Angel

I cross post occassionly because a few times I have posted something cool or funny here and a few minutes later is is reposted over on OO and the person takes all the credit for my find. Happend the opposite direction also. YOU FORCED MY HAND and now you must suffer the consequences of seeing a post title not once, but TWICE! I think I will start dramatically changing the titles though so as to throw people off and make them not only read the title, but actually expend a massive amount of additional energy to open the differently-named post. Muhahahah!

Did Autistic Angel just make a thread and then write his response as if someone else had asked the question? Very strange.
Anyways I think cross posting is poor form but I can't think why anybody would think that they should be banned.

Maybe AA is a member of his high school debating team and he just wanted to practice the format of throwing a debate topic out at random and then responding to it. Otherwise ... yeah, you'd think maybe another human being would have actually suggested the banning he responded to.

I think there should be a sliding scale. So if the thing cross-posted is extremely cool and everyone is happy to read it, the cross-poster could be celebrated and granted a special icon showing him or her being hugged by a cute cartoon dog. But if the cross-posted thing really, really sucks -- like a particularly stupid youtube video with sophomoric racial overtones -- the person could be tracked down by IP, kicked in the nuts by Calvin, and forced to discuss relative console merits with Hetz for 72 hours straight.

Well, that and you were banned long ago. And then your alts were banned. No, I wasn't banned. Or rather, it didn't go down the way you claim. I'd say you shouldn't speak authoritatively on things you don't know shit about, but that seems to be your "thing". Also, if I *wanted* to post there, there's nothing they could do to stop it (which has already been sufficiently proven, and since you don't know that proves that you don't know what you are talking about). The fact that I don't is because I choose not to.

Some people might argue that forcibly separating the two communities would promote greater diversity, but anyone who doesn't feel that GamingTrend and Octopus Overlords already have distinct personalities probably hasn't spent enough time at each site. Not that I actually support censorship like this (which doesn't prevent me from joking about it), but isn't discouraging the cross posting, rather than "forcing" a diversity, instead acknowledging the diversity, and rejecting what OO represents? Actually, the only thing I dislike is having to read "this has been cross posted at OO". Does anyone bother mentioning when they cross post here and at Bovine Conspiracy, or QT3, or Penny-Arcade, or whatever? I've just never seen the reason for it, since the sites are not affiliated.

I don't really read OO, so I say cross-post away! I have, on occasion, cross-posted between Gamers With Jobs and Gamingtrend, but only rarely and mainly due to a lack of readership crossover between the sites. And each time, it's led to an interesting conversation on each site that didn't match the other.

It used to bug me quite a bit. After doing this for several years now I really can say that I don't care. With the redesign I think I'll have an uphill battle with this again as we try to make the site more user friendly and the like, but at this point I'm not to worried about it.

If all the people I enjoyed conversing with online stuck with one community, I wouldn't ever need to post elsewhere. But nooooo, people have to segregate themselves to different communities and make me visit multiple sites. KD, you should take is as a compliment for GT when we make sure to post something here that we're also posting elsewhere. Means this community means enough to strike up the conversation in!
