Nah, don't feel dumb. RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication. It's a subscribe-push model for sites.
The software I use for RSS is FeedDemon -

RSS feeds are in a way like usenet software. With usenet software, you subscribe to a bunch of groups. With RSS, you subscibed to a bunch of feeds. The big difference is that you don't send messages to RSS feeds like you can to usenet groups.
RSS really sprung up as an alternative to email list servers. Those have been destroyed by spammers. No way for that to happen with RSS feeds.
