For example, if there were (hypothetically) a user you wanted to block so you wouldn't have to read anything they ever wrote ever again, ever. Could this be worked into the current system?
How about for threads you start that you don't want certain users posting in? A feature to lock them out of your threads perhaps?
How about for private messaging? Is there currently (or in the works) a way to block receiving messages from a particular user you never wanted to get a private message from, ever. (?)
If not, may I suggest a few options as to the automated response they get? Here, let's try a few on for size:
1) Hello User X, I'm sorry, but Lockdown is not accepting messages from you at this time. Have a nice day. (we can call this the ATB response)
OR
2) Hello User X, I'm sorry, but Lockdown thinks you have become annoying, and does not wish to read your shit today. Please do not attempt to post in his thread any longer. (we can call this the Calvin response) OR MAYBE (and my personal favorite)
3) Hello User X, Lockdown thinks you're a total jackass, and would rather shoot himself in the head than read any more of your bullshit. Just do everyone a favor and go away. Stop posting not only in his threads, but on the forum altogether. (we can call that the LD response)
Feel free to add your own of course.

Isn't there a Firefox plugin that lets you ignore people on forums? Never tried it myself, and I don't know if it worked for this forum software or just phpBB.

There was phpUserBlock or something which worked great - but it doesn't work with the latest version of Firefox, and hasn't been updated in quite some time.

I am 100% for that! How about for threads you start that you don't want certain users posting in? A feature to lock them out of your threads perhaps? That is kind of silly, IMO.

I've gone back and forth on installing said mod. The issue is that it doesn't address the actual problem. If we have somebody that causes enough trouble as to warrant being ignored, perhaps the problem should be dealt with at the source?

There are some people who just don't like other people, that's the way of life. IMO that's a great feature to have, though I'd personally go with option A (to keep it professional) and if that person who is being blocked by X user feels he wants another chance to make peace with that poster, he can PM a moderator who will pass along his message. If poster X is in a giving mood, then maybe he'll have a second chance.
This seems like a much more viable option that having to go with more censorship. (A lot of that going on around here lately unfortunately.) I'm a big believer in free speech, but at the same time realize that this is a private forum, so some rules are a necessity. Only thing is, some people tend to take things just a little too personally (this IS Al Gore's creation, after all, how people get offended in a virtual world is beyond me..) and that unfortunately leads to people who have been around here since the beginning to get banned. (I think we all know whom I'm talking about.)
KD, since you're going back and forth on the mod.. maybe you should put up a poll to see what the general consensus is?

Just practice self-censorship. If someone bugs you, ignore them, don't respond, and avoid their threads. It really isn't that hard. I think *EVERYONE* on *EVERY* forum has people they don't like, or people that bug them. Think about it, put 1 guy into a crowd of 1500 people for a few weeks, and then ask him how many of the 1500 bug him after that point - probably a quite a few. In person you would find this guy just avoiding the people that bug him, and clustering around the people he finds he likes. This is the equivelent of just avoiding someone on a forum you don't like.
Personally, I hate censorship in all forms, and have little respect for people that want to block out dissenting views. I hate to think how boring forums would be if they were filled with only people that agree with your views. Yuck! If someone bugs you, ignore them and they will eventually tire of trying to needle you, if they are really obsessive people, then you can try to make peace with them in PM. Most people respond to PM's in a more personal manner, and usually will yield to common sense.
You can find common ground with anyone if you look hard enough.

I think blocking the ability to post in a thread or read a thread is not that great an idea. I do however like the idea of blocking someone from PM's. Just like all those spam sex emails I get.....straight to the block list......

Ok, I've installed an Ignore user mod.
You can Ignore/Unignore a user by clicking on the link in the "View Profile" included with every single post or just clicking on the big ignore button. You can also manage your ignore list by going in your Profile-> Ignore User options
Test it out...see if it does what you want. If it does, I'll drop it into the black theme as well.

This is a bad idea.
Why exactly is it a bad idea? And yeah hetz, posted in the PS3 thread, but it was a huge improvement. I will tell you why-because its should be unnecessary amongst any reasonably mature group of adults capable of a modicum of self-policing. Look, there are 2 or 3 members right now that are pissing me off so much I want to not visit GT anymore. Apparently 2-3 feel the same way about me. Thats not good for the forums or anyone, but at the same time, when this ignore feature showed up I wasn't tempted for one second to put anyone on ignore. Its silly, its unnecessary, and it does nothing for me but potentially limit my ability to interact and be apart of this site. Part of being on a forum is accepting its flaws as well. Sure there are a few people I would love to see with the temp-ban stick, but I am not going to put them on ignore. Until they get booted they have every bit the same right to speak I do, and I won't take the easy way out and just slap them on ignore. What if they eventually say something I really would have liked to read, and I missed it? If it increases your enjoyment of the forum to put people on ignore, then by all means please do so-these are obviously my personal feelings and each individual should do whatever they need to do to have a fun and enjoyable experience in the time they are here. But for my dollar, this is the wrong path to take and serves only as a means of eventually further dividing and splintering the forums. I can deal with reading or skipping the posts of people I really don't like. Its a small price to pay to try to keep the forum whole, for lack of a better word. Anyhoo Arkon, I think its a bad idea. I think we should all just try to find a way to deal with it and not fundamentally alter the way we approach our group discussion-but seriously, if you feel more enjoyment of the forum and more desire to post and enjoy threads by using it, then more power to you-I just wanted to express my disagreement with this approach. And whomever put me on ignore-shame on you. Be man enough to at least PM about your issues first. Hell, even Kobra and I get along now. Bah. This just stinks.

I think for me the big thing is that with the ignore feature, I can make use of it to allow myself to cool down, without having to completely remove myself from a community which I love. Is it a crutch... perhaps, but I would rather have a cane now and again to hold me up instead of finding myself face down in the dirt.
