The new site will no longer support IE6. Seriously, upgrade. It's time. Or use Firefox. I don't care. Either way, we will no longer support IE6 in any future redesign work.
That is all.

The forums too or just the main site? I'm not among the unlucky but I think there's a number of people who post from work with IE6 as the only available browser.

If I had to make a guess, I'd say that the front page won't look 'right' for IE6 users, because it won't use any of the hacks that the browser is commonly known to need to render pages properly (as it never supported many of the standards of HTML code).
And the forums methinks are so 'generic' (or standardly designed) that they'd work fine on any browser made in the last 5 years or so.

Also, from my understanding is that the redesign is only targeting the main page and does not impact the forums at all.
I may be wrong.

That seems rather browserist of you. What do you have against IE6? They are browers too.

Whew! For a moment I was worried I'd have to do actual work at work, but the forums will be ok. My pos work PC is pretty much stuck with IE6, but then afaik I could run better stuff off a USB stick with portable apps.

Since I work in a secret government office, no USB's are allowed, and we're searched before entering the workplace by GKR's Btw - is Chrome any good?

And do remember, this doesn't apply to the forums. Also, it should be noted that while we aren't supporting it, it doesn't mean you won't be able to see it. You just won't get the intended experience and it's possible some visuals of the sight may not display properly

It only prevents you from seeing the NSFW thread which you shouldn't be looking at while at work anyway, right?

I've been using it for a while and have come to like it. The nicest feature is that each tab is its own process, so if one of them gets hosed/crashes/hangs it doesn't kill your whole browser.

The only browser you have at work is IE6?
a number of government agencies and some monolithic and/or fogey-ist corporations only have IE6 available to their employees. some of these have a number of 9+ year-old internal web-based apps that were constructed with IE5/IE6 in mind and will break on any other browser (including IE7 or higher) and they're highly disinclined to spend any money to update them...

Our IT admin is a bit hardcore on the whole security issue, or so I've come to understand You're searched by Go Kan Ryu karate guys? How cool is that?

IE6 is definitely not safer compared to the newer versions - it's just that lots of web-based software was designed to use it (and its silly way of rendering the web), and because it's basically all hacks, it outright doesn't work in IE7 and 8.
That is why workplaces haven't upgraded beyond IE6 - their software only works on it, and they have no reason to spend money to fix it. Why you still see Windows 2000 and XP in the workplace, too.

It's also easy on the disk access. It's nice as a small lightweight browser. I still live in FireFox ... mostly for the addins I've grown to rely on.

heh, I conviced work IT admin to upgrade us to IE7 now, since I told him I used it on certain websites which was unable to display properly in 6.0
Since he has no clue what I do, he couldnt argue with me, but refused to go to the latest 8.0 or any other browser . oh well, I got what I wanted :-D

IE8 is much better than IE7 and has IE7 compatibility mode. There is really not much good reason not to go directly to IE8 and skip the IE7.
