hi,

i have a small (well, medium) beef with a few of the banner ads - i realize they have to attract attention, but there're a few of them that look like a mad-scientist experiment to trigger undiagnosed epilepsy... or at least twitchy eyelids!  and until you move further down on the page so that the ad isn't in view on your screen, even the cursor flashes in time (or at least, mine does).  it flashes somewhat frenetically when you're in sight of the ad, but still blinks further down.  it's a bit distracting....

there are several that are bad but the all time WINNER is:

            WINNER

if flashing you've been selected

well, i've been selected (ooh!) every time that ad has been there, so the flashing never ends.  believe me, if i won the lottery, i'd pay you to remove that one, and maybe one or two others, like the "message alert" with the yellow flashing, jumping and jittering triangle....

i'm sorry, i'm having fun at CG's expense - when you all do a tremendous job and have provided a fantastic site, one i wouldn't ever want to do without!  and, if you email me your paypal address i'll send you $10 - really!  maybe other like-minded people would do so as well and we could have more muted ads... anyone...?  ...anyone...?

again, thanks for a great site,

D'oh!  I'll have that thing killed immediately. smile  As for the paypal thing, it is always appreciated - my paypal account is [email protected] and all proceeds go directly to server costs. smile  I'm glad that you guys enjoy the site, one day I hope to be able to do it with only game related ads...we are getting there, this is just a step to move in that direction.

hey, Mr. Director, King, Moderator, and general Nice Guy, Sir:

that was the fastest service anyone's ever gotten, anywhere!  thanks!  that thing was giving me a headache.

and YGPP - $10...

now, everyone else:

is anyone out there willing to go for some matching funds, or whatever you can spare - this is a challenge!  you think Halo 2 is a challenge?  Bah! that's nothing!  let's see if we can get all video-game banner ads on our favorite site, whadya say?  no more mortgage or spyware adds, no flashing unless it's a laser gun or shiny sword?  squeeze out what you can - a dollar, five, ten, whatever.  sell a game on the trading forum and send the money to [email protected]  if you have PayPal (use "send money" and "services").   if not, you can figure it out!

I challenge you to support this great site with something other than, "gee thanks!"... although i'm sure all those are welcome.

c'mon, let's give it a shot!

thanks everyone!

I am very appreciative of what you guys are doing!  Thankfully the agency I work with is aware that I will not compromise my readership with shoddy ads and they are very responsive when I ask them to remove the offenders.

On behalf of the staff, thanks again...I can't express how much it means that you value the site and our work that much.   Happy Holidays!

alright!  way to go CHRISOC!!  as for other people seeing this, i posted a challenge on Console Gaming, because i identify myself primarily as a console player.   i've been trying to get into a couple of PC games, with a little success, but i'm still an Xbox/ PS2/ Cube/ Dreamcast kinda player.

anyone who views this please feel free to help spread the word at your favorite forum!  and anyone who only has a dollar, or two, or five, send that!  consider this a PBS type "drive", a way to thank THEM for all their hard work required to make us all happy.

whew, that was quite a "rah-rah rant".   sorry...

Regards, and here's wishing everyone very, very happy holidays!

oh, and CG - you're very, very welcome!

It could be a second ad Raven.  The point is you don't have to be rude about it.  I had one removed, that much I can confirm.   If I see (or am alerted) to another one, I'll have it removed.  I see the other one that you are talking about so I sent a request to have it removed - I'm sure it'll be done Monday morning.  Until that time, I challenge you to find me another webmaster that is willing to remove an ad just because YOU don't like it.

I'd ask that if you see a particular ad that is irritating or offensive you send me a screenshot at [email protected] so that I can send it to the agency for deletion.  It makes it easier than describing them. smile Thanks!

over 200 "looks" at this post and not a dime more to help support going to gaming-only adds?  i hope at least that the reason is simply that you had no money left (not even a dollar!) after donating to tsunami relief.

i'm no saint, believe me!  but i feel compelled to point out the fact that i'm disabled, on a fixed (low-ish!) income, and i seem to have managed 10 bucks here and 25 to tsunami relief...

so how about it - a buck or two for this?

anyone?  even comments?  stupid idea, great idea, i'm an idiot, anything?

my mistake - maybe - since there's no way of knowing otherwise...  unless or until the ads all turn to gaming ads.  or i could have asked Ron about the total received, which is none of my business.

also, since no one - other than two members and Ron - made any comment in support (or, to be fair, rejection) of the idea... i felt like i needed to try to drum up that support somehow.

my apologies to all the anonymous donors!

either there were no anonymous donors, or there weren't enough...  the flashing continues!

Ron:  everything seems to be flashing, except for the one that just went back and forth (smoothly) a silhouette of a shooter figure, that one was fine, btw, much closer to a "gaming" ad, but i only saw it once, now everything else flashes.  i can't seem to copy them to send them to you, but that shouldn' t matter - all you have to do is surf the site - everything i've seen on every page is flashing - and affecting the cursor at the very least.  sometimes you can scroll down so that the ad is out of sight and the cursor stops flashing, sometimes it still affects it like right now, for me anyway...

right now, my cursor is flashing, so is my "hourglass" figure, i think i may be epileptic soon - please don't let that happen, i''m already diabetic!  HELP!

I'm actually changing out the banner code today.  Hopefully the new banner code will be less...offensive. smile  Stay tuned.

I submitted the flashing ads to be removed this morning as they appear to be in this batch of ads as well.  Just FYI.

They should be gone now.   If you see one (or one similar) please grab a screenshot and forward it to me.  I'll have it killed smile

WOW,

Thanks a lot, Ron, and everyone who worked on this and contributed, supported, or otherwise helped get rid of those obnoxious ads, LOL.
Maybe i'll even click on one for a change (well, maybe)...

gotta love that smiley!

yeah, i think my eyeballs are going to pop out and roll across the floor, LOL.  thank goodness Ron cares if that happens to us - or there would soon be eyeballs rolling everywhere...

while you're on it Ron, maybe the "poker chips" one could go, too?  it's not nearly as bad as the "red flasher" but it still hurts the eyes.  i'll bet this is a royal pain in the --- for you!

thanks,

We are considering some alternate forms of funding (read: paypal link) for the site to rid it of ads alltogether.  If they can't get this straight it just isn't worth it.

Can I ask a semi related question?  I sometimes play the little mini games that appear in the ad window, like the one where you have to kiss Brad Pitt (I'm secure in my masculinity, thank you very much) and the one where you have to shoot Master Chief.  My question is, does CG get paid for me playing and clicking in this window?  Because believe it or not, I sort of enjoy playing the stupid games but I close the window that pops up almost immediately.  If not, what, short of signing up for those deals, can I do make sure that CG gets credited for the click?  Or does it even matter at all?

Just wondering.  And is there some other way besides PP to make a donation to the site?

I think every time you click it adds to the total for the month.  Ron can certainly correct me if I am wrong.

As for another donation route, I'm sure Ron could send his home address to you if you wanted to send cash, check, etc.  Outside of that, what other types of donations are you thinking about that I'm not thinking about?

A snail mail addy was precisely what I was talking about.  I stopped using PayPal a while back.  Also, any method where I could help CG.  Ron, can you think of anything that you'd need that we could donate to help the running of the site?

Well, as I just got back from doing my taxes last night, I can tell you what the cost of ConsoleGold is for a year - its roughly 1200 bucks for the maintenance of the site and shipping.  When you throw in phone bills, trips to E3, trips to LA for meeting with developers and publishers, and the rest of the things we do to support the site its cost me roughly 2000 last year.  The ads are offsetting that by a about 1/5th (hey, something is better than nothing, right?).  I'd gladly run the site completely ad free if I could pull in enough every month to cover all our costs - this is a labor of love.  smile

Anyway, here is our contact information - any help is greatly appreciated.

ConsoleGold
2401 E. John Cabot St.

If you want to reach me directly you can either hit up my email or PM me and I'll send you my phone number.
