Does it represent anything or was it picked just for it's coolness?

I really like the logo, so I don't want anyone to think I'm complaining or anything.  I'm just curious if it was taken from anything or is representative of something.  I saw a previous possiblilty that represented a PS2 controller and wondered how the current logo was chosen over the others.

Well, it was a toss-up between the existing CG logo or this:

Mike Dunn from Foolish Studios created all of the graphics for the new site.  Unfortunately when you're trying to make a big decision like a new logo by committee - there's just no way to make everyone happy and so Mike probably created a good 10 or so different logos (including the one you're referring to which had a PS2-like controller in it.)

As I recall - this current logo style was a sort of collaboration between Ron (owner / director of the site) and Mike trying to make something that looked futuristic / techy in a similar vein as a certain very succesful game.

Mike is a very talented artist and I would highly recommend him to anyone needing artwork created.

Eldon is correct (sorry I didn't get to this sooner).  We worked with Mike from Foolish Studios on several designs, more than I'd care to remember actually. slywink

El is also right that this logo was an evolve from several revisions between the management of CG and Mike shaping it into what you see now.  We wanted something that would be futuristic (hence the sharp look instead of the 'solid gold dancers' look of the previous one) and could be seperated from the text and still convey that it is ConsoleGold.   Hopefully we have achieved that, I think we have.

Or, you could actually look to the institution that had that shape of a logo before all others, the University of Chicago:
