...as I type this. GT has a huge number of guests, I can log in at 2AM and there will still be 80 guests. Where are they coming from? What are they looking at? And the million dollar question, why aren't they registering and posting? If traffic picked up a bit here, this forum would be astounding.

Beats me.

I did notice this:

Quote
Most Online Today: 222. Most Online Ever: 360 (April 30, 2007, 01:02:23 PM)

That's pretty definitive proof that we are a secret Xbox 360 fanboy defense fortress.

Well, you can look at it this way - this time last year our most online was roughly 90.  To say that we are growing is understatement.  Getting them to register and stop lurking?  I'm sure that eventually something will either piss them off or compel them to come out of the woodwork and register - just a matter of time.

As for the 360 thing...all according to plan.  Muhahhahaha  icon_twisted

As long as Devil is around, it is only a matter of time, Ron.  It is only NOW that I fully understand why you continue to give him posting rights.

Hate to have to be the one to burst everyones bubble......

But over the last few weeks I've made it a point to check out these "guests" and every time I have- almost all of them have turned out to be search engines or other spiders indexing the forums and not real guests lurking over the site.

so even right now at 3am
202 guests, 15 users
but almost all of those guests are actually Yahoo indexing the content.

Sorry.

Somehow, I read the topic as "172 Quests".  I was wondering what kind of posting status required you to actually complete quests to continue.

Actually, can someone educate me on this "spider" thing?

If google is accessing the data somehow, then are these searches actually going into specific threads and "registering" as guests?

What I mean is... if you go to the main forum page and click on the 300 guests 22 members link, it takes you to what everyone is looking at.  So if I see 12 guests "looking" at the "WOW - Which Server?" topic, is that saying that most of them if not all of them are actually google searches that have brought that forum thread up on someone's computer somewhere?

I know I'm not very tech savvy, but I would like to understand how this works.

Thanks.

A spider is a program that's purpose is to "crawl" over all the pages on the "web" - which basically means that it will go to a web page and copy all the words on that page into a database then follow all the links on that page to other pages, read all their content and follow their links, and repeats the process forever (actually a lot more intelligent and mathematical than that - but this is a simpler way to understand it). So in essence a spider is what the search engines use to find content on web pages to use in their search engines.

Anybody or anything that views a page in the forums that's not logged in will show up as guest in the forums count of who's online.

The problem is that the forum software isn't "filtering" out these spiders in it's count of who's online. So even though we mayonly have 90users online and 15 guests, it may report 300 users online because it will also count the 95 spider processes that are currently indexing the content on the forums.

Does that help?

Are there forum software upgrades available for what we currently use that will allow for spider/bot filtering? Since we've set site records twice today for number of viewers I'd like to at least think not all of that was spider/bot related.

Way, way, way cool.

But why is it breaking up all the registered users onto different pages, Ron?

Is this unavoidable by the way it sorts and displays?

I can try to tweak it....still doing some testing.  Personally, I don't see the need to see all the spiders, I'd just as soon suppress them in that list.

I'd like to see the spiders so I know where not to sit.

This thread necromancy was brought to you by the letters A and H; also by the letter 4. Plus   Moliere's post. biggrin

So yeah... we should have a spider count in the stats section... but wait... wouldn't that be part of the redesign?

I think that was dropped in favor of curing cancer. i mean one redesign can only do so much during phase 1

of course the info may also already be available
