So I have some Christmas monies left over and was debating the merits of the Nintendo DS Lite. Should I go pick one up? Are they a decent enough handheld? What are the best games out there for it? In searching through the GT archives I've found several topics addressing this from last year and earlier this year. Nintendogs is not my cup of tea though and currently I am reading the "Best of the DS" thread to see what's up. But any and all thoughts on this would be appreciated.

ten million billion people can't be wrong can they?

With games like Contact, Scurge, Final Fantasy III, New Super Mario Brothers, Star Fox Command, Elite Beat Agents and about 20 others, not including the games coming out next year. The DS is clearly a very worthy Handheld system, hell it's practically better than at least two of the new home systems right now smile

Hopefully you have better luck finding one than I am.  All the local stores have been sold out since before X-mas and arranging a delivery over the next couple of weeks is going to be a pain.

oh yeah, and you should go with a pink one  Tongue

DS has become my gaming platform of choice.  I'm completely obsessed with it.

I used to play primarily PC games, and just purchased a PS2.  But the DS rules all...

I haven't given it a chance really, but it seems sort of...childish. Of course i've only played kid games on it, so ignore that first comment. I'm also NOT a console gamer, so i think it appeals more to people who like that sort of thing.

I can't see playing it though if i had easy access to a pc or console game. For mobility, i can see it's value.

It's just one of those things- you have to try it out.

I'm always down for Metroid and Zelda games, so that grabbed me right there.  But it also has REALLY easy, wireless multiplayer; I actually played a Metroid deathmatch against a coworker about 60 feet away!

The games are really well made, and the device kicks butt.  I've been pretty mystified by the homebrew scene, and the kinds of applications people are making for it.  Somebody wrote an app to turn the DS into an internet phone, for example.

Ah, that's right, he does own one.  I figured he had sold it by now.  He's like my Bizzaro clone.  I have both a PSP and a DS and my PSP collects dust.  He owns both and his DS collects dust.

Elite Beat Agents is justification enough for a DS purchase...even if the DS was 300.00.

It may be my game of the year now.

Man, you guys keep talking about Elite Beat Agents.  I was reading the box, and it just didn't sound appealing.  I should see if Gamestopo will let me try it out.

Yeah, sinus infections are really overrated.

[edit] as an aside, make sure you take antibiotics for that a few weeks longer than you are supposed to.  A friend kept getting off them as soon as he felt better... it ended up coming back.  He went through this for years!  I kept telling him to stay on them.  Anyway, he finally stayed on the antibiotics a month after his symptoms cleared up, now he is feeling tons better.

I agree.  From the box it doesn't look good at all.  Yet everyone is raving about it.  I wish Blockbuster rented DS games.

I hear you, 'break, thanks!

In light of 'breaks concern for my health and the spirit of the season: You should get a DS in every color. It's so great that if you put Mario Kart in the pink one, it will seem like a completely different game from the white and black ones, or even the Mario Kart you played 10 years ago!

(Sorry, I got a little logical there at the end)

Everyone on earth should have a DS!!!

Only buy a DS if you get a Supercard rig, otherwise, I find it fairly useless.

What is the supercard rig?

It has to do with running "Homebrew" on the DS and/or pirating games apparently.

Kobra's stating that the DS is useless as a straight gaming device. And he couldn't be more wrong.

I plan on getting involved with the homebrew stuff, but one of the big reasons will be to use it as a browser.

Its probably the surprise hit of the "holiday season"...I had a red GBA SP...and now a white nintendo DS Lite...and in this household that aint enough!  Looks like tonight I'm picking up another one, probably a Black one.  If anyone is having a problem finding it, they are around in some of the stores in my area (Fred Meyer, Target and Best Buy), all three colors available for the regular $129.99 price.

I'm having a blast right now with Brain Age and Trauma Center.  And trying out some GBA games too, mainly Final Fantasy V - don't know if I like it yet.

But to the original topic...its one of the better gaming console I have ever played with, and its priced about right and its handy.  I can put on headphones and wont disturb anyone else in the household, and although the graphics are just OK - the gameplay (and types of games) are really great right now.

I went and got a PS3 a week ago (with all the hype) with a friend of mine, and so far the graphics blow us away, but the games have been OK.  I find myself playing the DS more than the PS3 (maybe when other games come out).  And I sometimes wish I picked up a Wii instead - would've been more fun to play with my son.
