(If you wait in their damn line) linkyIt breaks the unspeakable geek code of not having a legit copy to begin with, but Im standing in line with little shame. Having hocked ( ) my gold copy awhile back, Im missing some of the olde school gameplay nowadays. So there it is. edit: props to Kasey Chang, whoes nice FAQ is also included

And on the line I go! This runs fine on XP right? You'll need the xcom loader at the very least-otherwise the video will be borked. http://members.aol.com/stjones/xcomutil/

Fortunately I have the Collectors Edition as well as the PCLamer cd that has it on it from many moons ago. Despite it's less than stellar graphics you all will love it. It's best if you also download the xcom utility to make it run better which can be found here http://xcomutil.scotttjones.com/ . As far as I know they don't have the free download of it(XcomUFO) anymore so it shouldn't violate the CoC here. edit:Oops! Same place as listed above.

So since registration is free and the game is free...does that mean we can get it from other sites now for free too?
Basically I think it is insane that every single time I try to download it there is a huge line. I download from tons of sites and I have never seen queing like Fileplanet. Personally I think they just make non-payers wait to try to get them to buy the premium service.
Anyway since it is free now shouldn't any site be able to post it?

While Fileplanet does hold some assinine "download patents" on some subscriber only files, it seems the answer to your question is yes. And the line is nothing more than a gimmick to get people paying to cut through it. Having to wait an hour for a <10meg file is absurd.

Personally I think they just make non-payers wait to try to get them to buy the premium service. Guh. What tipped you off? *shrug* Not wanting to get into a full-blown FP debate, but...bandwidth is money - everybody's got to pay the bills somehow. FP relies on members' fees and advertising to pay theirs for their paying and freeloading customers, respectively. The queues are obviously a ploy to get you to fork over for no-wait service. If you don't like it, go elsewhere - there are plenty of alternatives. Most of their "exclusive" content is short-lived and hits the other sites in fairly short order; usually the only exceptions are the occasional betas. Oh, and thanks, OP, for the notice. Been ages since I played X-Com. Damn, though - 8 megs. Anybody remember the days when that was actually still a big deal?

386 25Mhz and a 40MB HD for me as well. And damn, it was a b*tch trying to install Wing Commander 2 on it. Always had to delete nearly everything to make it fit.

Amiga with 20 MB harddisk. Seektime much higher than my actual DVD-Burner. Luckily I was able to hook a 240MB SCSI to the A590 later without having to buy anything than the HD (~400$). Thats what I call upgradepath!

First PC was a 386/20 with a whoppin' 4MB of RAM - splurged on that! - and 80MB HD, back in spring of `89, IIRC. Before that, Apple IIc sometime in the mid-80s. And before that, a TI 99/4A. Now where's my walking cane and cocoa?

It helps to run it off a SATA RAID drive as well. in other news, am i the only one surprised that that much gaming goodness is contained within one 8 meg download? 8 meg, i tell ya!
