xbox 360 graphic mode question

Haven't played with it too much as I got the system yesterday, but I have a question.  I think my 32" lcd tv is in between 720 and 1080 resolution.  Will the 1080 still look better and should I use that (that's what I'm doing currently).

If you can use 720p, that is going to look better than 1080i just by virtue of the fact that it is progressive scanned (every line rendered at the same time) instead of interlaced (lines 1,3,5,7,9, etc. then back through to get 2,4,6,8, etc. on a second pass).  That said, 1080i is a nice looking resolution and easily beats out the standard 480i or 480p that you'd get on a 'standard' television.  That help?

Er, whether 720p or 1080i is visually superior is a matter of some debate and certainly not as black and white as KD makes it.  However, I'd recommend 720p for the 360 since most games support it natively (1080i is upscanned by the hardware for games that aren't 1080i native).

How do you know whats what? MY 360 gives me options only for screen resolution-1280x1060, etc, so I just select the highest res from that list.

You're using the VGA adapter, yes?  720p is equivalent to 1280x720.  However, IIRC, you are using the Dell 2005FPW?  It has a native resolution of 1680x1050 so you aren't really going to be able to match the native resolution of the game (720p) with the native resolution of the monitor.  Luckily the Dells scale very well  and the 360 scaler seems to be be pretty good too so I would just try all of the different resolutions until you arrive at what you think looks best on your monitor.

or you could get the 2405FPW (which I have :twisted: ) which runs 1920x1080 natively., and takes component in as well.

If you want to run it in HDTV mode, go to the setup blade on the dashboard and in the display, select the x720 resolution. (720p) and turn OFF the higher res option. Voila!

I hooked up my 360 to my LCD tv that supports 720p, and my regular 36" tv that supports only 1080i, and the only difference I noticed between 720p and 1080i is that the interface for some games doesn't line up as nicely in 1080i.  PDZ actually has part of the ammo counter off the screen in 1080i (that's with the dashboard set correctly to 1080i).  

As far as quality, I couldn't really tell a difference between the two.  1080i looks great and so does 720p.  

On a sort of related note, I noticed that all of the HD channels through my local cable provider (cox communications) broadcast in 1080i and not 720p for some reason.  Also, i just bought a new dvd player that will almost always default to 1080i hardware upconvert rather than 720p.  On another somewhat related note, why the hell are HDMI cables so freaking expensive?  I love the idea of not using the mess of HD component cables, but ack, $75-100 for an HDMI cable?

I got my HDMI cable for 16 bucks.  Works perfect too.  No monster cables here.  (*pokes DamageInc. in the side again*)
