http://www.theverge.com/2012/5/2/2993600/99-xbox-360-kinect-subsidized-bundle

Quote
Microsoft is planning to launch a $99 Xbox console package with a monthly subscription as early as next week, according to our sources. The software giant will offer the 4GB console with a Kinect sensor at its range of Microsoft Stores in the US, subsidized with a monthly cost of $15. We're told that the two-year subscription will provide access to the Xbox Live Gold service and possibly some additional streaming content from cable providers or sports package providers. Customers who sign-up for the deal will also be covered under a two-year warranty.

There will be an early termination fee for those wishing to break the contract ahead of its two-year duration, and we understand that Microsoft will position the package as a competitor to Apple TV, Roku, and PlayStation 3. For those buying the bundle now and getting the cheapest two-year Xbox Live Gold option, that's about $299.00 + $120 = $420 vs. $459 over a duration of two years. With E3 2012 on the horizon, and Microsoft working on a "Woodstock" music service — it's clear that the company wants to ensure as many people as possible have an Xbox in their living rooms.

interesting idea, and surprisingly not a horrible overcharge in the long run (provided they did the math right).

I guess for people who can't come up with the money upfront it isn't a terrible deal.

it's an awful deal no matter what. with the next gen soon these things will be dirt cheap in fall i bet. it's 360 just for the 2 years. plus it's the fucking 4gig model. MS is hardcore ripping people off and if this becomes normal fuck right off, consoles. i will not rent a console, ever.

for some people this is the only way they will be able to afford one, much like a lot of people couldn't swing a smart phone without the exact same type of deal.  I dont' see the issue.

Wait...there are Microsoft stores? That eliminates like 90% of the USA's population. biggrin

Can't afford? Take your $99, set it aside, then take your $15 per month and set it aside until you get $299 + $50, which is what the bundle + kinect costs. Then save $50 for next year.

I think you misunderstand the entire concept of this type of deal... it's so they get the xbox now, not in 2 years of saving.

Yes, but they could have been saving for the last 2 years. It's kind of silly to say all along they couldn't afford it and now they suddenly can.

the average person is indeed very silly.  Look at rent to own places for example.  Most people don't/can't save money worth a damn.  The only way they can budget a console is if it's cheap enough RIGHT NOW. This does that.  I think you know this though and are just being contrary to be doing it.  ninja

No, I just think that anyone who claims they can afford a $99+ XBOX  but not a $299 XBOX should not be buying an XBOX. Exactly how are they affording any games on this razor thin budget?  The part we seem to agree on is that anyone who buys this is dumb.

I thought the same thing.  How can they get any games for it.

Renting.  Borrowing from friends.  Also, some libraries have video games.

Given how much more you usually end up spending when you pay over time, the additional $40 isn't bad, especially when you factor in the extra year of warranty service and the ~$14 less you'd pay in taxes.  If it's easier taking a $99 chunk out of your monthly budget for one month and then $15 each month after that, then this would make sense.  As for games, there are a ton of good games available for $10 or less.
