After really enjoying Wizardry 8, I bought the Wiz 1-7 + gold compilation. I played 1-3 years ago on an Apple II, but I was just curious which games people think are still worth playing. Which are most like Wiz 8? Also, is there a major difference between Wiz VII and Wiz Gold?

I would avoid Wizardry IV: The Return of Werdna.  It's one of the most difficult RPG's ever made.  I think I put about 5 hours into it and gave up with frustration.

I only played a bit of Wizardry Gold and never played VII.  Wikipedia talks about some of the differences here: link.

I think 6, 7 and 8 were supposed to be a trilogy so I'd recommend starting with 6.  I never played it but the name Bane of the Cosmic Forge always made it sound awesome.

I remember loving Wizardry 7. Not sure how it holds up, but it is obviously much more advanced than the earlier games.

I played through Wizardry on the GBA.  Was going to start up 2, but was kind of disappointed in how they get deleveled and don't keep their equipment (they might not even keep their stats, I don't recall).

I also played Bane of the Cosmic Forge back on the Amiga, which was cool.  Sadly I moved on to something else near the end, so I still would half like to go back and finish it (but would have to start over, of course).

I didn't know there was a Wizardry game on the GBA. Was it any good?

Yeah, it was pretty fun.  The graphics were good, too.

Another interesting game I have is Ultima 3, which was released as a ROM (I believe Garriot gave the guy permission, too).  Haven't played that version yet.
