This is actually supposed to be pretty good, surprisingly.

I enjoyed it, and have heard that there are two secret missions, and the game warrants playing all 20 playthroughs allowed. May warrant a new thread.

I finally played through it.  That was pretty great and not what I was expecting.  The game is unique enough that I could actually see that selling systems.  I'm excited to see what the critical reception will be for the full game now.

Yes, I suggest that with new Wii U games maybe we start actual threads for them, since this is just more of the overall Wii U system and such.  Plus, it might give the illusion that we actually play some Wii U games.  slywink

Yep, and it comes with Windwaker.
Quote
Nintendo has announced a price cut for the Wii U today, stating that the Wii U Deluxe bundle will sell for $299 starting on September 20th. The Wii U Basic model has also been cancelled. The limited edition Wind Waker HD bundle will retail for this new price point, which includes a new deluxe model, the game, a digital copy of Hyrule Historia, and the Zelda-themed GamePad.

Now if they were really smart they will have the update that links games to accounts instead of systems before this comes out.  Officially, there is no confirmation that it exists but some screenshots of it leaked from Europe a couple months ago.

They are but you really donít have much danger in losing them.  Nintendo tracks all your digital purchases and if something happens to your console they will replace them for you.  Itís more of an annoyance in having to do an extra step than anything.  I have a 3 terabyte hard drive hitched to my Wii U and itís pretty nice not having to worry about switching disks.

Also! For anyone with the Deluxe, donít forget about the Wii U digital promotion.  I just signed into the site a few day ago and discovered I had earned $15 in gift certificates.

never really had an issue.  of course most of the games I played didn't use much of the touchscreen or were Wii games.

In my experience it was on the low end of that scale.  I basically got to the point where I never played the Wii U without the gamepad plugged in.

Update out today, but more importantly, they're planning on fixing on of the Wii U's biggest problems this summer.

Quote
a Wii U firmware update that will introduce a new fast start-up menu in "early summer".

Iwata said the 20-or-so seconds it currently takes to start Wii U software "significantly impairs" the console's simplicity of use.

Following this summer's update, users will be able to fast load titles from a new menu of recently played game icons on the Gamepad screen. Users will tap the game they wish to play, then select the Mii representing their Nintendo account, before the system launches directly into the game, bypassing the main home menu.

This may get you into games more than 50% quicker (although what Iwata actually said was that it'll make you feel like the start up time is more than 50% faster, for whatever that's worth).

Yeah, I didn't say it was the biggest problem...

OTOH, loading what few games there are on the Wii U does make me not relish coming back to the console.

It was hard to resist a Wii U after Super Mario 3D World released, but Mario Kart 8 looks so absolutely cool that I caved in and ordered one. I'm not a fan of the Gamepad, does the Pro controller serve most games well? In particular, 3D World and DK Jungle Freeze?

They do at-least for co-op players, never tried to use them solo.  Have you given the game pad a serious try though?  For my large hands it is one of the most comfortable controllers I've ever used.

It should work fine for those games.  Mario barely uses the pad, and DK doesn't use it at all.

I think both are very comfortable.  My kids and I use pro controllers for Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario 3d, and Rayman Legends.  Some of the games will let player 1 change from the gamepad to a pro controller, others don't.  Either way, I've found the gamepad to be a surprinsgly comfortable controller with good ergonomics.  I have long fingers which can feel cramped on controllers with a tighter configuration of buttons, sticks and d-pad.  Both the gamepad and pro controller work really well for me.

By the way, the pro controllers have great battery life.

I probably just need to give the Gamepad more time, I've only spent a little bit of time with it and I thought it felt awkward. I'll still want a Pro controller for my fiance, the wiimotes are pretty terrible.

I received the system from Amazon last night and bought Super Mario 3D World from GameStop. Getting it to connect to my wifi was a huge hurdle, and the lack of an ethernet port is an outright dumb omission. After looking for help online I found that I had to manually configure the wifi connection which completely undermines Nintendo's philosophy of making their platform and games approachable for everyone. Not only that, but the network card is apparently a piece of shit because I have to have the Wii U in the same room as the router in order to hold a connection. So... online is a no-go with this machine for me.

I didn't have much time to play Mario after fucking around with the wifi settings and waiting for the system to update, but so far I'm really disappointed in the hardware.

I am always a little puzzled when I hear about people having network problems with their WiiUís.  Maybe I just got lucky but I have never had trouble getting them to sync up instantly, even when Iíve brought it to other peopleís houses.  My router also has two walls between it and the console so Iím not sure why distance is a problem for you unless you live in a lead bunker.

One thing I have noticed is that Nintendo devices (3DS as well) donít like the WPA+WPA2 setting on routers.  Have you checked your settings?  It might be as simple as switching to just WPA.

Unfortunately, the System Patch is pretty essential if you donít want to have a miserable time with your WiiU so getting internet is important.

Typing "Wii U internet connection" in a search engine brings up a lot of results so I know it's not a completely isolated situation.

What's a good alternative security setting for routers aside from WPA+WPA2?

Oh, I wasn’t actually implying that it was, just that I hadn’t had any trouble despite setting mine up in multiple houses.

As for security, just try one or the other.  I haven’t had problems personally with my WiiU but I did with my 3DS.  If I have it set to WPA+WPA2 (mixed mode) it will refuse to connect to my internet.  Setting it to WPA OR WPA2 works fine.  I’ve heard of other people have the same problem with both the WiiU and 3DS.

Todayís Nintendo Direct featured a pretty good promotion worth sharing.

If you buy and register Mario Kart 8 before July 31st, you will get a free download code for your choice of New Super Mario Bros U, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3, or Wii Party U.

In other news, it looks like Nintendo won't be having a press conference at E3 again, but they'll be streaming some things and have Smash Brothers tournaments and such.  As revealed in this weird Mega 64 video where they "infiltrate Nintendo".
