Oh, yeah, I'll still be there Day One, but it looks horrible.
They've barely shown anything, what looks so horrible? For most people a Nintendo system that can simply do what the 360 and PS3 can do, plus with Nintendo's games, is all anyone's asking for.

Don't knock it. Most consoles are using slightly older graphics tech because playing games is ALL they're supposed to do. With your computer, you not only have to worry about graphics capability but all the other stuff that runs in the background: Antivirus, system services, all that fun stuff. Heck, the Super Nintendo had a 3Mhz processor in it. The original Playstation had a 33Mhz processor in it.
They're also making something that is going to be out there for years so it should be at least somewhat forward looking. At least since they are claiming that this console is supposed to be for the big AAA multiplatform stuff that was mostly absent on the Wii or had ugly versions. They could have at least used a DX11 part as the basis for the graphics. Umm...no they can't. DX11 is a Microsoft owned and licensed technology. There's no way they're going to hand it to Nintendo to use in they're own graphic API, unless of course they pay one heckuva huge fee for it.

That's the problem...What we've seen and heard isn't good. It can't even play with two people.
A Wii-HD isn't going to attract anyone to abandon their PS3/360 for 3rd party games. This puts Nintendo right back in the position the were with the Wii.
Again, the best thing would be that this thing tanks hard, Nintendo abandons home consoles and you get your Mario Kart 74 on the PS4.
Everyone wins!

Yes you can. One person has their experience on the tablet and the other people with controllers. I think once some games come out, it will make more sense. Right now you're thinking about it from the perspective that everyone has to have a tablet to play a game, but the idea is one person has that and the others play a different way with the TV. The Ubisoft game showed an example. One person uses the tablet to spawn monsters that the other people fight. Everyone is playing...it's just that the tablet person is playing differently. If everyone had the tablet, then they would all be spawning monsters that nobody would be around to kill.

Why can't the others kill the monsters with a tablet? Are monsters not scared of tablets? One person gets the 'New, Innovative, Revolutionary, Controls" the others are playing a Wii game. They can spin it any way they want. I can see it now: The next XBox is announced and they have a new controller that will read your mind, wash your car and bring you beer, BUT that was only for one person and everyone else in the room will use a rusty soup spoon to play! Once the games come out, I'm sure that would be better too.

Deathly afraid.
Look, I think there isn't any real technological reason that you couldn't get 4 of these things working. I also think that if they allowed it and all games focused on four player table combat you would have just as many people bitching about how this tablet costs so much money and nobody will ever spring the money to pay $200 a piece (theoretically) to get four controllers together. They can't win no matter what. I think this is more about doing something interesting with technology, but keeping cost in mind.
I'm probably the only person on this forum really excited about this, though. I'm kind off the oddball in that I don't like FPS games, love and play my 3DS every day, think Kinect is awesome, and like my PS3 over my XBox.

I agree that people would bitch either way, but wouldn't you allow people the option to have the touch screen for everyone?
Or, even better, use your 3DS as the controller if you wanted to?
I think there is probably going to be some changes before we are able to buy one.

I'd rather have the tablet screen than my 3DS screen.
I'm sure Nintendo would love to give you 4 tablets to a Wii U, but I think they went the smart road and realized the massive cost to get something like this together and figured out that not too many people would actually do it. Kind of like back in the day when you could connect 4 XBoxes together for multiplayer.

I also think that the reason for the one unit is not entirely cost-driven, but the way they're intending it to be used. Unfortunately, no one else seems to be clicking with their vision, which is going to lead to problems for them.

Why do I need two screens? Why would I want to waggle? Those were huge successes. I try to be very open-minded when it comes to Nintendo product announcements. I can usually see what they're trying to do. I'm totally in. But then I'm always totally in.

My mistake there had me preordering the Wii. And I'm in on the Wii U, too (I don't even hate the name, but like the Wii and 360, I've learned that the public will get used to any stupid name if it's repeated enough). However, I'm less worried about gamers not getting it and more worried about the game makers. We saw how hard a time they had with the Wii, and with the U, it seems like it may take longer for the concept to click.

Yes, that is definitely a challenge with Nintendo hardware being kind of odd. How will the devs respond? I'm sure that there will be tons of shovelware and minigame collections. My Nintendo console is never necessarily my most-played one (though we will see if the fact that the graphics are much improved will change that). However, some of my favorite games are on those consoles because Nintendo first party titles are always wonderful (we can excuse Wii Music).

May not be called the Wii U after all CVGNintendo is considering changing the name of its next-generation console, Wii U, sources close to the platform holder have suggested.
CVG understands that following a disappointing E3 reveal - and public confusion over 3DS - serious discussions are ongoing at the highest level in the US and Japan as to whether the firm should cut its losses and give the console a different name.
Public confusion over the Nintendo 3DS has forced the platform holder to roll out bold red box stickers to differentiate the similarly-named system from the original DS, and it even enforced the TV tagline 'This is not DS. This is Nintendo 3DS.'
It's been indicated that Nintendo is keen not to repeat the same mistakes with its next-generation home console, and we're told a change of name is a real possibility - especially after president Satoru Iwata told investors Wii U needs to learn "a bitter lesson" from 3DS and public confusion over its features.

The issue isnt the name, it's the fact that the machine looks identical to the previous version (same with 3DS). The reason I was confused by the U reveal is that it looked like a Wii add-on.

or the Gameboy and Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advanced This worked just fine as you knew what you were getting. Color. Advanced (graphics). What the hell does a U imply? And weren't most people calling it the Super nintendo? That at least tells you its more than a regular nintendo. They just got cocky with the 3ds. Like every second sequel around the time 3d movies became big.

a look at the launch potential. I can't wait to see more of what it's capable of doing- if done well it could theoretically mean I might find myself choosing whether to get a console only title on the 360 or Wii U.

It's interesting to read that they are getting quite a bit of developer support. That's good news for them. Didn't seem like they had too many great 3rd party titles for the Wii. Getting some of the big franchises should help a lot. I'm pretty curious to see what the system capable of when it hits.

Apparently the Wii U will be "on par" with the PS3 and 360. Technically, Nintendo's Wii U will launch the "next generation" of video game consoles when it hits stores later this year. But as far as pure hardware power, the upcoming system might be better grouped with the current generation of high-definition consoles like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. At least that's what Darksiders 2 director Marvin Donald said in a video interview with Nordic site Game Reactor.
"We'll have a few new features for sure, but I think visually, for the most part, it'll be pretty much the same," Donald said of the Wii U version of Darksiders 2, which is being planned as a launch title for the system. "So far the hardware's been on par with what we have with the current generation, so, based on what I understand, the resolution, textures, polygon counts and all that stuff, we're not going to being doing anything to up-rez the game, but we'll take advantage of the controller for sure."
Donald's statement runs counter to that of Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia, who said when the Wii U was first unveiled at last year's E3 that he understood it "will have 50 percent more processing power compared to the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360." But it does match up with a rumored set of hardware specs for the system that leaked last December, which described a system that was "very similar" to the Xbox 360 from a hardware perspective. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2012/03/does-it-matter-if-the-wii-u-only-has-current-generation-hardware-power.ars?clicked=related_right

I actually don't think "on par" with 360/PS3 is a problem, with one caveat. If the programming architecture is significantly different, and we see the typical "early games look bad" phenomenon, it could be an issue. Otoh, who is going to be buying it and will those people care?

I thought they said it would be more powerful?(although no one was expecting next gen) so,the Wii U will be 'On Par' with 6-7 year old Hardware? well technically that would be more powerful than the Wii. It was supposed to be more powerful than the 360/PS3. Not significantly, maybe, but still more powerful.

In other words, most games will look and play better on other consoles that people who would buy and play them already have.
On the other hand, it might mean introducing those type of games to others. But that was the same thought for the Wii, and that didn't quite pan out.
