As I said in this month's NPD thread, Nintendo likely has a price cut plan that's just awaiting execution. Whether it gets kicked into action will depend on September sales. They have a lot of boxes in the retail channel, so those will need to clear 1st and I doubt they'll make a price cut before mid November. They currently have the capability to deliver 700k/month to the US market and the past 3 month's sales have been 1/2 that, so the indicator this is really happening will be if shipments are reduced. I'll bet info on shipment volumes though, is one very tightly guarded secret at Big N. slywink

You seem to be making the assumption that a new model is being introduced. Clearing existing inventory or reduced shipments are only factors if it is a different sku.

Clearing existing inventory is a factor if you're a retailer -Target, TRU- that has a s-load of current stock. My understanding is that retailers make a slim profit on consoles, so having to drop $50 on existing stock could be a real choker in a bad economy. I know some manufactures credit the difference in such cases, but apparently Big N doesn't. As to shipment reductions, if sales don't pick up in September they'll already be enough Wii's in the channel to supply the humongous Holiday sale surges they had for the past 2 years.

According to Gamespot, it looks like the official announcement is coming Friday, with the price cut taking effect Sunday.

We're 2/3rds of the way through September...hmm...either this price cut date was planned months ago or sales aren't meeting expectations.   icon_twisted  It'll be interesting to see if they can get sales back to the 600k+ level, I'm betting this doesn't do it.

But I already have a Wii!   crybaby

And, though I like having it for when gaming company comes to the house, and the occasional need to rest my thumbs - I definitely don't need two of them.  Oh well... I'll get a PS3 soon, and I have two 360's, so I guess I should just SHUT MY MOUTH!

And I saw this random post elsewhere about the price of the Wii - let me clear it up a bit:

For $199.99, you get a Wii, a Gamecube, a NES, a SNES, a Nintendo 64, a Commodore 64, a Sega Genesis, a Sega Master System, AND a Turbografx 16 all rolled into one.

Sounds like one hell of a deal when you put it that way, eh?

Well except that I already owned and played all those other systems and nostalgia isn't enough to make me want them again. Graphics on the wii are bad enough, I really don't need to see a Commodore 64 game on a 57" TV.

Yeah, but you have to disclose the full costs to get that multi-Nintendo-plaform system: Classic Controller +$20, Gamecube &/or wavebird controller (if you can even find one) + $20-$40 = $239.99 - 259.99.
I'm sure some can make the argument that the NES, SNES, Genesis & TG-16 games work fine on the Wiimote, but I sure wouldn't. Luckily N64 games control very well with a GC controller. Still a great value IMO if you like playing the console classics. I just spent 2 hours last night playing Super Mario World with the classic controller - AAA gaming all the way. smile thumbsup

Don't forget compOnent cables are extra, and if you don't have wifi you have to buy a network adaptor if you want to go online.

Do component cables matter, I thought the Wii could not output anything in HD (at any rez)?

It can't, but component will display a progressive (as opposed to interlaced) image, and the color separation is better, even at SD resolutions.

Yup, 60 fps and better color definition makes a noticeable difference. I got my Wii on opening day and component cables weren't available, so I spent the 1st week playing via standard composite. The difference in visual quality was even discernible with LoZ:TP, which has a graphical quality that's skewed towards the GC.
