Hitachi.
Is one type of drive more reliable than another?

Samsung.
I don't know about more reliable, but llama.com reported that the Samsung drive was much quieter than the Hitachi.
Of course, soon they'll all be Lite-on drives.

Well, for me, I'm not at home to check which one I have. But when jament said that one was louder than the other one, I knew that I had THE LOUD ONE.
Seriously though, it is ridiculously loud and hums like a cheap optical reading a warped $0.01 blank disc. I'm just glad that I can drown it out with whatever game I'm currently playing.
So, if Hitachi is the loud one, then I most certainly have a Hitachi. Of all the luck...

I have Toshiba-Samsung, and I thought it was pretty loud. It isn't always noticable..with games sometimes I don't hear it, but when I play a movie, I notice it.

As long as it isn't the dreaded Thompson drives from the original Xbox!
My Xbox has a Samsung while my 360 has a Hitachi. No noise issues here.

I have the "THE FAN IS REALLY FUCKING LOUD AND ITS CONSTANT WHINING DROWNS OUT EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE ROOM UNLESS THE GAME IS TURNED UP" edition. It's really kept me from playing my console as much as I'd otherwise like to, thanks to it.
It doesn't help that I don't dare place it back in my entertainment center (where I can close off the front door and block out most of the noise produced) due to the amazing amount of heat the thing generates. And I have a pretty open-air entertainment center, too.
And to answer the question - my first 360 was the Hitachi/LG one. The one that nearly drilled a hole the size of the hole in the DVD tray (upper right) into a game. Not sure what my replacement console is offhand.

I also have the HUGE F'N FAN version (w/ a Samsung drive).
I would close the door to the entertainment center where the 360 is housed to soften the noise, but then I'd be worried that the 360 and its power brick would both melt to the center of the earth.

Samsung and it seems pretty loud, when I'm playing Live arcade games the unit is so much quiter. That's because the 360 doesn't power up all the fans inside unless you're actually playing a 360 game. Something about not using all the processors within or something, if I remember right.
