Where did "AAA" come from?

People use "AAA" to describe big new titles, but where did it come from?  I never hear anyone call movies "AAA" or books, cars, whatever. I actually saw it tagged next to the names of games on some shopping sites when I was buying PS1 games - "Gran Turismo AAA", for example.

That's a good question Teggy. I first stated noticing the 'A' review terms on game sites about 10 years ago. I'm not sure what the origins of it are either; just that I use it myself. From the best of my understanding, here's how the A's work in comparison to percentile and descriptive review systems:

AAA = 90 - 100% (outstanding)
AA   = 80 - 90% (excellent)
A     = 70 - 80% ( good to very good)

Others may equate different percentiles, in fact I've heard some forum members at Gamespot argue that AAA is for the range of 85 - 100%.

Sheesh...I can't believe I forgot about how A's are used in classifying minor league baseball. It makes sense that this is probably where the game ranking term comes from.
Something I've noticed about the A ranking system is that gamers use it to conveniently eliminate games from play consideration; i.e unless a game has a ranking of good or better - 'A' - it's not considered worth playing which is why no one ever discusses 'A-' quality games. like all of us here, any long time gamer has had their fair share of shovelware and truly crappy dissapointments. So being able to quickly classify a game as being of play worthy quality does come in handy. I've noticed this system is quite similar to the bronze, silver and gold rankings that GT uses.

See, to me--and I don't know what the original intent of the term was--it has NOTHING to do with how good a game is and everything to do with the budget of the game, size of the development team, amount of marketing emplyed by the publisher, etc. So you could have a full bells and whistles gets a huge marketing push AAA game that sucks (I'm sure we can all cite examples).

That may have been what the original intent of 'AAA' was a decade ago, but on just about every game site I frequent 'AAA' is now used to refer to a game of outstanding / superb quality. The general consensus in most gaming forums seems to be that you can't consider a game 'AAA' until official game reviewers have awarded it a score that would at least make it a contenter for GOTY honors.
I only started seeing references to 'A' and 'AA' quality about 5 years ago, so it's likely those terms are newer.
