I'm semi-kidding but I see a lot of this going around in here:

"I'm not going to play online until I practice"

In my best Iverson Voice: Practice!?! Practice!!!?! We're talking about practice!?!?

I don't know about you guys but the last thing I care about is how well I do in video games (as most of you can tell   ).

Getting the crap kicked out of me doesn't change the enjoyment of a game one bit. There was no difference to me between the beatings I'm getting in our ESPN NFL league and when I repeatedly slaughtered Poncho in ESPN MLB.

Do you guys take this stuff that seriously?

I can appreciate your sentiment (it's about the social thing), but for some it's just no fun losing, or getting outright pwned smile

I do plan to play Halo2 online without too much practice, but only with people I know. I wouldn't dare go into a public server.

Well put Devil.  In a FPS (or sports game) the only way to get better is to play.  I got slaughtered in our weekly Crimson Skies sessions a few months back, but I still had fun and I like toi think I improved as we went along.

I like to jump in offline and learn one or two maps and the controller setups before I go online, but that's it.  I'm not practicing headshots or anything, just where to go and what to do when I get there.

You continue to be a mountain of misinformation and delusion.

Other than that though... I think you, me, and a few others here at CG are the exception, not the norm.  Very few people are as laid back as we are about our videogames.

Actually, I find it's usually college students with that kind of free time.  The 12-year-olds are actually in class some of the time.

Just to get my two bits in: I play games to have fun - and I don't find getting my ass whupped (either by the CPU or other people) to be fun.  So online or off, I usually only play games I'm at least somewhat good at.  Don't need to be the best around, but if I can't at least hold my own, I move on to somewhere I can.

I would say that the reason I play multi-player is for the desire to improve and to leave satisfied that I played my best.

Sound weird? I guess so, but to a large population of video game players the ability to play competitively and to improve as measured to the population of players is the enjoyment of gaming.

I know that in RTS games on computers you had to practice and play. Moreover, I enjoyed my years of playing RTS, but it was allot of practicing and rethinking. In FPS, it is all about playing with the idea of improving.

It's not a better way to play, but it to certain players it is an enjoyable way to play.

Call me competitive, but I love tournaments and the battle for top spot.

I'm staying offline to avoid spoilers to the storyline in Halo2.

I admit; I 'practiced' the main mission in Halo2 for about an hour and a half before going online...

I can see both schools of thought.  Thankfully no one was that good as of last night anyhow.
