First off, I want to say that this isn't a problem with the entire chain, at least not on the corporate level. This is more of a warning of how to get around stupidity, not a warning to stay away from the chain.
Here's the thing. I had $100 in credit towards an XBox. I called them, and they said they had one. One catch: I had to buy it as a bundle with an extended warranty and a MVP membership for a total of $185, or $35 extra the store would be pocketing. They simply WOULD NOT sell the system by itself.
I let it go, since at the time they only had one system.
I called again today, and got the same spiel. When I explained that I didn't need the warranty as I was going to mod the XBox, and didn't care about the membership as I don't go to town that often (it's a 40 mile trip each way), the guy said that that's how GameCrazy wanted it, so people would buy the games in their store.
I told him that it made it more likely that I wouldn't buy -anything- in his store again. His response: We're the only people who have them in stock, so they'll sell.
I told him that I know he dosen't make the rules, but I didn't like the policy, and I was going to call corporate.
I did, and the Corp. CS person was flat out shocked that they'd tell me this, that they'd say I -had- to buy that combo. She called the store, and then got back with me to tell me to go there, they'd sell me the XBox without the bundle.
As far as I can tell, as this is 2 different stores in the same city, that it's at the District Manager level that this is happening. So if it happens to you, or anything similar, don't feel afraid of calling corporate HQ. The number is on GameCrazy's webpage if you click on their logo then hit 'Contact Us'. Anyway, it's time to go get me an XBox with my credit...then NEVER SHOP THERE AGAIN.
