There's a digital download only "companion" game coming in in July called Warhammer 40K: Kill Team.  It's a twin stick shooter set in the WH40k universe.  Sounds like $10 well spent to me.

Here's a trailer:

Looks fun.  And for $10?  It shall be mine.

According to Major Nelson, this comes out tomorrow on XBL (7/13/2011)...hopefully today on PSN?

EDIT: Looks like "Later this summer" for PSN, boo!

We are very excited to confirm that Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team will be releasing on Xbox LIVE tomorrow! The game is just 800 Microsoft Points, so about $10. PlayStation Network version will also be available later this summer.

Just played a little from the first level.  Good production values.  There are 4 char classes to choose from.  You can upgrade your characters and there are different weapons and upgrades for each slot.  Also looks like there are in-level upgrades that you can pick up.

Can we get a separate thread for W40K: Kill Team?  It is a totally different game, you know.  slywink

unskippable in-game cutscenes are killing me.  Why both Trenched and this do this I wish I knew.  They want you to replay the same levels again and again to get a better score, then cripple you with staring at the screen unable to do anything while it pans around and does flashy things wasting time.  frown

Gameplay is very fun though.  Game is begging for online 4 player.

You can choose to play one of 4 space marines:
Librarian - versatile ranged and melee with warp powers.  Force sword and bolter to start.
Ranged Veteran - heavy bolters and such
Assault Veteran - jump pack, chain sword and bolter
Tech Marine - servo arm and bolter rifle to start.  can make turrets.

And...you can also pick your chapter!  I know it doesn't sound like much, but it's a cool feature for 40k fans.  Blood Ravens, Ultramarines, Blood Angels, White Scars, Imperial Fists, and Salamandars are included. Graphics look good.

I played some local coop tonight, and it's good action rpg fun.

I'm not done, but I will only be playing in very small doses which is sad because this is the kind of game I could lose a night to easily otherwise.  I just can't stand sitting there doing nothing watching stuff I've seen already.

not just is it only 2 player, but it's 2 player OFFLINE, no Live functionality at all.  It's bullshit to have all the videos shouting 'COOP!' when it's local only imo.

So I'm in the second mission and trying to use one of the melee centric classes (Vanguard Veteran) and when you get to the end where you have to shoot the pylons, I keep getting picked off.  Are melee classes only for when you can actually coop?  Or am I expected to power up and come back with better buffs?  I can't take down the pylons fast enough without getting picked off by the steady stream of Orks.

My impressions are that the difficulty is unbalanced for non-ranged classes.  Maybe the intention is that you will only play coop or maybe they expect you to run the first level over and over to get upgrades.  It's not reasonable to attempt some of these missions without a pure ranged class dealing high damage.

The non-skippable cutscenes thing is getting annoying too.

I'll try the vanguard veteran today.  It does seem like some classes are better suited for coop versus solo.  The sternguard veteran is great solo.  Focus fire is kill-everything-within-sight mode.  The librarian not as much.  His ranged attacks aren't that great (starting out), his melee is good, but not awesome.  Warp attack is nice for rounding up baddies and standing in the middle of them.

Have you tried going with an extra grenade slot and tossing grenades at the pylons?

I did not have grenades when I was at that part.  I just ended up using the sternguard veteran and was able to beat the level quickly.  I guess I need to get some power ups and try the other classes after.  I tried that level with the techmarine and was able to get to the last boss, but was not able to beat him.  Sternguard though, no problem.

I played the part you're talking about with an upgraded librarian and it was near impossible.  The green engine pylons only seem to be damaged by ranged weapons, not melee, and grenades don't seem to help.  As you said, it's much easier with the sternguard veteran.  I did manage to barely complete it with a sliver of health with the librarian, after several frustrating tries.  That section was much, much easier playing it coop.  1 could focus on the pylons while the other handled the orks.  I think the best coop combo for that level would be sternguard vet and tech marine, since they both have the strongest ranged weapons.  Even the boss fight for that level has an annoying only ranged section due to a change in the level layout.

Yeah it really feels to me that they balanced only on coop and not for each class in SP.  That's just silly, especially when you have to do local only coop to boot.  I hope the guys making Space Marine are a different group.

Just played the demo and loved it.

That said, I know NOTHING about Warhammer 40k. Should I bother with this or will I be completely lost?

What books should I read...sounds like a neat story.

All I've done is play the Dawn of War PC games.  All you need to know is that the Universe is awesome.  Other than that, Wikipedia for details and enjoy the carnage.

Space Marines are like the popcorn of the Warhammer 40k universe. They are easy to enjoy and don't require much in the way of knowledge.

However, if you truly wish to learn more about the Warhammer 40k universe (and I recommend it! I recently started running a WH40k RPG-campaign, and it's very satisfying), make sure you begin with the Eisenhorn trilogy, usually available as an omnibus. Most people consider it the best books about this setting. It's not about Space Marines, but about an Imperial Inqiuisitor who's job it is to track down heretics, chaos and xenos (aliens). It's much more down to earth than most WH40k-fiction, yet still very epic.

Yeah they mention an inquistor in the demo and I'm like 'he sounds important'.   icon_cool

Inquisitors are among the most important people in the Imperium. When they speak, they speak with the voice of the God-Emperor himself. They've got vast financial and military resources at their disposal, and they can accuse and execute anyone except the God-Emperor, even up to and including the leader of the Inquisition itself. They've also got the authority to order Exterminatus, the complete and utter destruction of life on a planet, which I'm sure is going to be a topic of this game.
