If I have no experience with Witcher, can I just jump on the bandwagon at this game?

Yes, but you should really play both the previous games.

In the same way you'd make the third one happen?

I've tried (and failed) repeatedly to finish Witcher 1. It's just not going to happen.

I may try to tackle 2 since 3 got pushed back.

The Witcher 2 is a much different game than the first one.  I liked it a lot more, and whatever story points I might have missed by bailing on the original game midway through, it didn't impact my experience one bit.

The first game is still good though, and the story is amazing. It has what is quite possibly the greatest plot twist in the history of computer games too.

They also unveiled the regular and collector's editions for the game, and the regular edition looks better than the collector's editions of other games.  Also, a digital version of the Witcher board game is coming to PC this summer.

Yeah, I got all the way to the end, but the way the fight at the end is structured makes it very difficult. As if the bunch of guys aren't difficult enough, but you can't take a break to heal before the boss, made worse by the fact that there's a rather necessary potion I only realized would have made things far easier, had I known that going in. Only problem was that I wasn't very focused on potion making to begin with and was blindsided. And this was on Easy!  I hate a game that forces one to play one way and ignores choices in skills that were made throughout. Two Worlds II comes to mind.

Yes you can ATB. They are separate and even the game mechanics are different from game to game.

You'll find that the stories this is based on are a good primer, but the ongoing plot that looks to be getting resolved doesn't have direct ties to the last two.  It will reference it I'm sure, but they are more self-contained stories than most RPG series.

I would recommend playing #2 and picking up some of the books so you know what's going on and why you should care.  They are totally worth the time imo.  Witcher 2 is one of my favorite games.  Just don't try to play it like you would an Elder Scrolls game.  The combat is far more nuanced than 'hit, backstep and repeat'.

Just wanted to add that there is apparently a hidden message in the E3 trailer where one of the things they say is:

By the way, if you're new to the series, don't worry, the game will introduce you into all you need to know, and you'll start loving (and hating!) characters in no time!

I've started on my second playthrough of The Witcher 2, and I've added the not-official-but-made-by-a-Witcher 2-employee combat mod (found here http://redkit.cdprojektred.com/?c=mod&m=show&p=77).
It makes combat more fluid (and easier, because Geralt reacts a lot quicker), and lessens the amount of items and skill choices. So far it's pretty good, and I fully endorse it for second playthroughs. I didn't die once during the prologue, whereas the first time I had to replay several more difficult fights.

It adds some other stuff too, like automatic parrying, some new moves, and no more QTE's.

When was the last time you played it? The game went through a major balance change in one of the big patches, which among other things made these initial battles easier and more responsive than they were at launch.

Yeah, first playthrough was when it came out, and people complained about the steep difficulty in the prologue. So I may see a double effect here: the combat mod AND the rebalanced prologue / more responsive controls. Still, reading the comments about the mod, the general consensus seems to be that this SHOULD have been an official patch.

Still, combat isn't too easy. There's an arena now in which you can just fight, and I get a regular asskicking there smile But it does feel like combat's more in line with the game being an RPG (and not a pure action game).

Probably, sounds like they really want to ease new players into the game. That said, this is like playing Mass Effect 3 without playing ME 1 or 2. You'll probably miss a lot of references and lose some emotional impact.

Another issue is that, W3 is the most evolved version of the game. If you end up liking the setting and game, it'll be difficult going back to the older, clunkier games. It's extremely hard to go back to ME1 after playing ME3 or 3. The same for Witcher 2 and Witcher 1.

I'd say pickup 1 and 2 for super cheap, they're always on sale, often for just a few dollars. Turn on cheats for them and play through for story. The Witcher world does a bunch of nice takes on fantasy tropes.

A neat detail about that video is that all the three primary characters portrayed are very central in the books. There's Geralt and Vesemir, his mentor from the witcher castle. We saw him in the beginning of the first game. The woman they're hunting is Yennefer of Vengerberg, Geralt's primary love interest before the games.

This is going to be great. smile

Yes, although the English translation is frustratingly clunky. Just accept that every character in the books speaks in ways nobody would ever speak in real life, probably due to the translation.

100 percent agree.  IMHO CD Projekt has always been extremely consumer friendly with their DLC, DRM, and taking their time with their games.  Can't wait until May 2015!

. Agree as well, all developers other than maybe Naughty Dog and Rockstar need to have a big meeting to address the incompetence shown by the triple A releases this fall and focus on avoiding such things going forward.
