If you have purchased a copy of Half-Life 2, we are sorry you are still waiting to play. This is not Valve's choice. Vivendi is insisting that the game has not yet been released, and has threatened that Valve would be in violation of its contract if we activate the Half-Life 2 Steam authentication servers at this time.
Thanks for your patience and we will update you when we have more news to share.

Some retailers are selling half-life 2 early.  The game requires authorization from Valve to play, so noone can play the game until Valve updates Steam.  So there are people with a retail version out there that have the cds, but can't play the game.  Valve would unlock the game, but Vivendi is blocking that move.

1. Alll you have is a quote by Valve about what VU won't do - and considering the crap these two have thrown at each other I wouldn't trust either of them

2. Lets say they are blocking it because that is what was legally agreed to....that is their right.  Why the hell would they want to allow it to be released early when all stores are not selling it yet?

Look at my situation for example - no stores around me have broken the date so if VU let it be released I still couldn't play...unless I bought through Steam!  Which doesn't make any money for VU....so why would they want that?

If people should be mad at anyone it should be Best Buy since they are the only ones who actually acted in violation of their contracts.  They were not suposed to sell until the 16th and the sold early - this is totally their fault.

That's what I've been saying through all of this.  Best Buy is being their usual dickhead selves.

They aren't dicks for selling customers what they want, they're dicks for selling it before the agreed upon street date.  I thought that was pretty evident. The street date isn't an "if you feel like it" thing - it's in place to maintain fair business practices, a concept foreign to BB.

Geez, you would have thought that a bunch of women watching Oprah bought this game with all the crying that's been going on.  Oh no, the game got sold early.  They can't play it until Tuesday.  Everyone has waited for over a year from when it was originally announced to come out, a couple of days isn't going to kill anyone.
