I got pretty bored of the first game around the beginning of Chapter 4, but I did like quite a few aspects of it and I'll be picking up VP2 and hope that it connects better with me.

Fans of the original will also be pleased to note that Arngrim and Lezard Valeth (both alive during the period of VP2) will voluntarily join Silmeria as well, lending their considerable talents to the party.

Gametrailers had posted their video review of this late last week but I'm guessing it was inadvertent since it was pulled soon after.  Thankfully, it's still preserved on Youtube for the time being:

I'm pretty optimistic that I'll enjoy this one more.  I'm actually pretty happy that they axed the period system- I thought it was a fascinating idea in theory but the idea really hurt world exploration since I felt like I needed to devote most of my time to battling in dungeons to ensure that I didn't become underleveled.

For those of us at work without sound, could you maybe summarize the review in a sentence or so?

Condensed from the review:

-Demanding
-much more difficult than the first game
-repetitive enemies
-lots of grinding and backtracking, very linear
-some tricky puzzles
-Beautiful cutscenes and graphics, but poor out of synch dubbing in several instances
-Stories behind important NPC characters are never really explained and somewhat one dimensional. You will not get attached to the characters
-Battles are more complex but more interesting than the previous game

They don't actually give a final score, but overall the reviewer seemed underwhelmed. I'm guessing he'd rate it around 70-75%.

I wasn't terribly excited about this game to begin with, but this info just killed what little interest I had.  Will definately be skipping this one.

Actually there was a score at the end- 7.8.

main reason i lost interest in vp:l was the complete lack of party character interaction, & it looks like this game not only lacks that, but much of the background storylines as well. pretty as it is, i'll probably wait...
