Story here.

Long story short - the PS3 Assasin's Creed demo that was being shown behind closed doors was actually being rendered on a Xbox 360.  The 360 was covered with a sheet, and a 3rd party USB PS2 controller was being used.

Interesting.  Very interesting.

it makes it worse that they pulled it. Real bad Press now, I wonder how the gaffers are doing with that one?

Even worse - the GT4 'demo' that was  forced upon everybody at the Sony PR was done entirely on a PC. Stories here or here (two different spins on the same thing).

The story may have been pulled if it wasn't true.

In past consumer electonic shows where console hardware, or games for them, were not ready for prime time they would have the games running on PCs or Macs.

Likely there's very little difference in the quality of the game when it finally comes out on the console so other than a little embarassment that they couldn't get it ready in time for the console it shouldn't impact the final version of the game.

more than anything, what it confirms is that Ubisoft can easily release this game for 360 if Sony pisses them off. More than likely Ubisoft showed it to Sony and Sony asked for the exclusive, but since they development had started on 360 it was just easier for them to show the demo on the 360 at E3.

Did you guys hear the one about the Wiis games being rendered on a Sega? Yeah completely rendered on a Sega with a bed pillow case over the system so no one would see it. Completely true to, I have good sources.

Matt Keil, producer for X-Play, stated on QT3 that he clearly saw a Sony Dev Kit running the game when it was demo'd.  Meanwhile, on GAF, there are reports that Ubi said it was a PC emulating a PS3, whatever that means, though that could have meant a dev kit too I suppose.  Honestly, who knows at this point?

Personally, I just want to see the footage that was demo'd.

Excellent point. It doesnt really matter to me, as long as the footage was good, I mean work went into it, so I guess lets appreciate the work that went in and not worry about what it was running on.

The PS3 dev kits don't fit in the final box config quite yet.  They look like a 1980's-era VCR, so it would be easy to mistake it for a PC.  Mistaking it for a 360 on the other hand....

The games on the show floor at Sony's booth were running on rack mounted PS3 hardware.  Bigger than the final units, but smaller than an 80's VCR.  Could be mistaken for rack mounted PCs, but not desktop PCs.   They're getting there.  I don't know what people were running on outside of Sony.

I thought it was kind of an odd choice to put the racks behind glass doors so everyone could see that they weren't production units.  But whatever.  That might have been for convenience so they could tell quickly if any of them caught on fire smile  I did see one lock up and have to be rebooted, but that's normal for pre-release games.
