I try not to do general advice threads, but here we are and what the heck.

Okay, the 399.00 shipped 360 premium with free Gears of War has me like this:  saywhat  and I'm ready to pull the trigger on it as that's about 100.00 in savings.

however, if I buy the 360, I won't be able to afford the Wii.

I want the Wii very badly as if you've been reading here you've seen and I'm anticipating it greatly.  But, admittedly, there are several games upcoming (next 6+ months starting with GoW) that I'd very much like to play on the 360.  I figured I'd get one eventually, but not this soon.

However, the deal is making me  saywhat. Wait did I say that?

So all things being equal- I will like both consoles and the games available for each...., what should I do?

Oh, what should I do?

One thing to consider- 360 is likely to have pricedrop sooner than the Wii.  Almost certainly not this year, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a drop in the first six months of next year.

Also, what games on the 360 are you looking forward to?  A lot of stuff has been pushed from holidays to next year and that typically means March at the earliest and sometimes into the summer or more.

Depends on what type of gamer you are.  If you're all about, more or less, the 'usual' experience then maybe a 360 would be your choice.  I mean 'usual' in that it's strictly a console with a controller, awesome online implementation, and no sort of "new" gaming ideas from a hardware standpoint.

The Wii sounds fantastic, but in the end of the day it's going to be a different experience.

Getting both games free is likely a glitch.  Amazon will probably disallow it and you'll just get GoW, which is still a great deal.

Great deal indeed. If you had a brandsmart in town today is the last day for a premium at $348.88 new.
Considering gears of war is $60 though, you did even better than that.

Do you have an HDTV? If so you won't regret your 360 purchase. I just recently replaced my aging SDTV with an HDTV and it's almost a completely new gaming experience how different things are. The 360 really shines in graphics.

The xbox 360 has been out almost a year now so the game library has been steadily building up, with plenty more to come. When the wii launches in November they're still going to be struggling to get enough games out. So it woudn't hurt to wait a year from now to get the Wii right? By then they'll have plenty of games out, their online gaming platform will be in place (since they said no third party online games till next year), and even possibly, the price will have dropped to a more reasonable $199.

Good decision in any case, and remember you can get the Wii at any time down the road!

Not quite - I think you saved ~ $118 (you still had to pay tax on the $399, right?). Still, that's a great deal.

I think you'll be happy with the 360 and the Wii doesn't come out for another month and a half - plenty of time to scrounge up an extra $250.  icon_wink

Well fuck, I'm seriously considering buying this too.  Even if it's non-Costco.

How did you wrangle it to get both games free, ATB?  Even if it's going to be fixed I want to give it a shot.

It asks if you've purchased anything online over the last year that you didn't pay taxes on. If you answer "yes", you then have to write down to total dollar value of your online purchases and pay tax on that amount. Of course, there's no way for them to know if you say "no".

Anyone know if the brand of VGA cable matters in terms of quality?  The Microsoft-blessed one is $40, but I can get a generic MadCatz for $13.

I think ATB should have gone with the Wii slywink

Oh, and I think the VGA adapter has something for hooking up the sound included with it.  I'm not definite, but if I remember correctly you can get something that will let you connect regular speakers/headphones up with it.

Yes, the MS VGA cable comes with an adapter. You can also get one at Radio Shack for a few bucks.

By the way... how the hell would I go about connecting the XBox 360's sound cables if I was going to use a computer monitor?  All I have are a set of headphones...

First of all, the Joytech VGA cable works for me with no problems. I'd recommend saving yourself some bucks AND it does optical out for audio (and comes with the cable too!). (it's the one depicted in the pics below). Also, I recommend www.monoprice.com as a first place to look for cables. (DVI and HDMI for teh cheep there!!)

Just get an el cheapo RCA> 1/8" (3.5mm) earphone jack converter. If you don't want to switch anything and you leave the PC on, run it into your PC's audio in port. You might pick up a little bit of PC noise (YMMV based on main and sound boards), and if you have stuff like MSN running you'll end up wanting to turn off the audible notifications. See scenario 1.

Or you could get a y splitter as well. See scenario 2.

Scenario 1 shows you using your PC soundcard and then you are running the sound from your 360 into the sound processor.
The option in scenario one shows that if you have an optical in jack you can connect the 360 to the PC using it instead.

Scenario 2 shows you using a standard splitter from your 360 and the PC into the earphones.
The option shows that you could just move the earphone jacks from one to the other.

Scenario 3 uses a 29.95 switching unit (CVS880) that will do the same thing for you too.
The option shows that you can use the second parallel output in case you have a friend over who can listen as well. This requires a second RCA-3.5mm converter.

Yes I am one confused little man. My wife has actually sweetened the deal in that she's letting me 'sell' my best buy gift certs to the house and letting me put the cash towards the 360.  So my out of pocket costs will be about 220....and with the 125.00 bonus i'm getting from work, final out of pocket will be south of 100.00.  Can't beat that with a stick.

eek I just read my disjointed post with the 3 scenarios. My brain must have been stuck on  retard mode. Hell, I wasn't even consistant with the google clip-art.

My apologies, LE.

Scene 1 - use the line-in on your soundcard (optional: use the optical in port if you have one)
Scene 2 - use a y-splitter to bypass your soundcard (optional: instead of getting splitter, just move the earphone jack from one to the other)
Scene 3 - get a switching box (note the yellow highlights) to select audio source. (optional: you can have a second output using this solution).

See above for the pics. I'd personally use Scene 3; it means you have one more port open for any other devices, such as your PS2.
