I tried but I just couldn't get into the 3rd one.  Still...looks pretty.

Well, considering Tropico 3 came out almost a year ago and this one isn't due out until next year, I'd hardly call that "pumping these out kinda quick nowadays".  Especially compared to the frequent 12-18 month development cycles of many other "franchise" games these days.

Well, totally different companies published and developed the first ones than the second ones.  Gathering of Developers published the first two (and expansion) but when their business started to go south they got gobbled up into Take-Two and the rights sat unused for a few years.  Kalypso announced they had secured the rights to Tropico from Take-Two in 2008 and released Tropico 3 a year later.

i have it on both the console (not bad, but the ui can be irksome) and on the pc due to a cheapy sale on d2d with the expansion.  despite my intention, i think it will end up at the back of the backlog though, as with many of my recent games.

I'm planning on getting the 360 version. They had some issues with the third one on the 360, but I'm hopeful they can do it right this time.

Iam playing the hell out of the steam demo and I must say I am loving the changes so far.
Its not much so that it could not have been a expansion pack but in these days of no SimCity it will have to do.

No.  4 is nothing more than a refined version of 3 (which was fine anyway).  I'd play 3 and if you like it, pick 4 up on sale.

I get significantly better performance in the T4 demo than in T3's full version, despite my rig being way over the requirements of both. Anyone else notice this happening?

GET T4, I played T3 to death along with T1,reloaded and T2. T4's demo is awesome the pop up missions is a nice touch. The training\tutorials alone makes the game easy for new comers to get into. The demo holds your hand more than any of the tropico games combined. Even If your a big guru in city builders you will find the older versions of tropico hard to get into, especially when you find yourself voted out of office just as you get things going. 
You will be fine with T4 plus steam gives yo T1 and T2 if you pre-order now.

Good news. I haven't played for a while, what with all the big titles coming out, but I fired it up this afternoon and had a lot of fun with it.
