Because of MLB the Show, I'm dusting off the PS2 now, and buying a wireless controller for it.   Since I'll be getting the controller and hooking the PS2 up, I'm curious what some of the other fun PS2 games I might have missed are?  I love the 360, but it really needs the library to grow a bunch.

Basically, what are the great PS2 exclusives lately?  Any great kid (5 year old) friendly games?

The games I do know of that were supposedly good:

- God of War

I'm sure this topic has been covered too, probably last week, but didn't see it when I did a quick search smile.

Shadow of the Colossus and Metal Gear Solid 3 are the defining games of this generation.

And if you dig rythm games then Amplitude and Gitaroo-Man are the best the system has to offer.

I second the Ratchet and Clank games.  They are the most fun I think I had with the PS2.  Jak series is good too, if you want a challenge.

This much older 'kid' also moves the R&C and Sly series. biggrin
Very lighthearted games, but a lot of fun to play too.

Sounds like lots of good stuff.  Which Rachet and Clank was the best?  What was the conclusion on something like Dragon Quest VIII (comparable to Final Fantasy?)

Thanks!

We have the first three R&C games and they're all great.  I actually played #2 (Going Commando) to completion and it was a blast.  The third (Up Your Arsenal) seemed a bit tougher for the single-player but my sons love the fact that they added multiplayer to it.

Dragon Quest VIII is amazing.  And long.  Very long.  It's also very old-school feeling.

I'd definitely recommend Dragon Quest 8 if you're into RPGs.  Of the R&C games, I think the third is the best overall, although they're all excellent.

Dark Cloud 2 is another gem you can get pretty cheap these days (assuming you can find it).

If I could recommend games as the reason to buy a PS2, they'd be:

-GTA
-Ico
-Shadow of the Colossus
-God of War
-Katamari Damacy

... and I'll soon be picking up a few MGS titles, for what it's worth.

What he said.

And the Ratchet and Clink games.

And the SSX series. Go with Tricky or the latest which is called SSX: On Tour.

Agree with everything already mentioned but must highlight mikeg's recommendation of Resident Evil 4.  While it still predominantly seems to be thought of as a Cube game, the PS2 port of RE4 is supposed to be pretty stellar.

Suikoden III and V are great if you like old-school console RPG.

Suikoden IV while not as good as the other two are also a decent console RPG but a bit shorter than the others.

Hell, I love the those series...my kids and I used to fight over who got to play next.

I think Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper along with Jak & Daxter are some of the finest platform games ever made and absolute must haves for any PS2 owner.

I quite enjoyed the first Jak as a very well refined 3D platformer. (Heard that Jak II went closer to a strange GTA/platformer hybrid that wasn't all that flattering.) Personally, though I enjoyed the game, I found the first Ratchet & Clank game a somewhat frustrating half-platformer half-shooter combination. The platforming wasn't sharp enough, nor was the shooting. More the shooting. But that's me.

Don't forget about Viewtiful Joe.  You can get both on the cheap and play very well if you don't have a Cube.

God of War - best game of 2005 for the PS2 (and probably one of the best for the ps2 overall)

R&C - All of them, the 3rd was a bit on the easy side, but all of them are great fun. (think kids will enjoy too, as someone else mentioned)

Jak series - 1 and 3 were great, the 2nd has it's moments but overall was too hard and annoying.

Sly series - imo too easy and get's boring very fast (not enough action for me I guess) , but might be good for young kids !

Just buy any R&C game (not the latest MP game!) and you won't be dissapointed, if you like platfomers.

not to take over the thread, but I just don't get Shadow of the Colossus, I've played it twice and never got further than the first giant, and I don't have one positive thing to say about it :/
Not sure what I've missed ?

I just purchased:

MLB 06 The Show - apparently best sports game on the system, and I want baseball

Dragon's Quest VIII - probably paid to much on eBay, but getting the FFXII bonus disc too.  Random encounters may eventually sink this for me

Ratchet: Deadlocked - a Rachet game, appealing with less jumping, more fighting, and I can play coop with one of my sons

Ice Age 2 - purely for the little boys off of eBay.  The love the Scrat character

Star Wars Legos - for the boys.  we had it on the XBox, but it got scratched up.  I refuse to touch the XBox again just to play a game that isn't backwards compatible!

Logitech Wireless Controller - suprisingly cheap feeling, seems to work decently though.  Compared to the 360 controller, its pretty darn disappointing for $40

Still debating Metal Gear 3: Substinance, as I've really blown my game budget!
