Next-Gen.Biz has put up an interesting article detailing the top 100 games of the 21st century.  What makes this list different than the normal top 100 is that games are based on units sold, then by revenue generated (with Gamerankings scores used for tiebreakers).

Worth a read as they have a lot of interesting stats with each game (units sold, franchise sales, revenue, etc.)

Very interesting, and sometimes surprising list.  There are a surprising number of Gamecube games on the list, and I'm amazed Max Payne on PS2 sold 1.6 million copies.

Interesting list but I don't care for some of the methodology- only singling out one platform for the sales rankings brings a rather skewed view since many of the mulitplatform games would have been up *much* higher on the list.  And I'm not sure about only including one game from each series since it can be of interest which series have mantained relatively consistent numbers through multiple iterations (Ratcht & Clank for example) and which tanked after a strong first game (Onimusha and Dark Cloud 2 for example).

You do realize it's Top 100 by sales, right?

This isn't a #100 list of all time (by reviews, how much the site loved it, whatever), it's a #100 list based on sales.

metallicorphan - the reason why those sequels aren't up there is because the title in the series shown was the best seller of that series, and they also talked about (and showed) the overall sales for the series.

They said for series titles they only included the highest selling title per franchise in the list. They didn't want to fill it up with sports titles and sequels.

If that list is based on sales, it makes me sad to admit I am a gamer then.

But come now - NFL Fever, 50 Cent Bulletproof, and that Matrix game were awesome games!

I'm curious what the number totals are for the multiplatform system releases combined are.
1.5million Starwars battlefront sold on the PS2 is impressive.. but how much between all systems? (PS2, Xbox, PC, and PSP)
And what about battlefront 2?

Speaking of numbers, anyone know somewhere that keeps an up to date list of sales numbers and figures for console games and hardware? Always fun looking at that stuff to see what's selling and what's not..

Franchise sales includes sales of top selling spin-offs, sequels and predecessors as well as other console versions of the same game.

If you have tons of spare cash you can subscribe to the NPD Funworld reports, but it's usually leaked on the NeoGAF forums.  You can also take a look at VGCharts.  It's still incomplete but is probably the most complete site of its kind at the moment.

In addition, it doesn't cover anything PS1 or older, and it doesn't cover any portable games.
