I think people complaining over the new look of have some rose colored glasses for the old game. Even back then, he was still a generic black clad hood, and later a hood with a mechanical eye. It was many things beyond it that helped make him a character.
This new design does look like some bad design out of a teen to 20 something vampire romance flick. But if they can get the character right, and remove some eye shadow from him, it should turn out okay.

I don't mind a reboot (though I am not thrilled about it either) and I don't really mind the new look, but I really hope they get Stephen Russel back to play Garret. It will definitely mar my appreciation of the game if he's not voicing Garret.

I'll take "generic" over emo ninja. I'll withhold judgement for now since they did good with Deus Ex but almost everything they have said has me worried, especially the line about modernizing the game. If they put quick time events in Thief I'm going to lead a riot...

Is this really that big of a deal? How often do we actually "see" anything of Garrett other than his hands in FPS view? A couple cutscenes, maybe.

Ok, Gratch gets the Garrett model that looks like the Hamburglar. If the gameplay is solid, they can dress Garrett up like Bozo the Clown for all I care.

I do think the trailer looks good, but the first time I watched it all I could notice was someone else doing Garret's voice. I will still likely be giddy as a school girl when this comes out (unless my PC can't handle it).

Eidos makes a good point. There has never been a voice actor who could portray an animated character without being able to physical perform every action that animated character does. It simply isn't possible.

The actor playing Garrett needed to be able to perform his own stunts," Audio Director Jean-Christophe Verbert explained. "Garrett's a really athletic guy. We could have pasted Stephen's voice on top of the actions and stunts of someone else, but this wouldn't appear natural. It really wouldn't make any sense to capture the full performance for our other characters, but not for our star." Worked well for the latest tombraider. They had a separate voice actress and stunt woman playing Lara Craft and it was very natural feeling.

Stupid excuse from Eidos, but I still don't think it's that big of a deal. The amount of internet handwringing and "OMG they've RUINED the Thief series!" seems awfully silly to me, but to each their own.

A large part of it is that Garret was not an anonymous protagonist. His personality made the game just as much as the stealthy game play did. Actually, I would say even more so since Thief3 already saw a departure from elements of the originals (not for the better in my opinion) and Russell’s performance played a large role in holding it together. Now Thief 4 might be a great game on its own merits but a lot of what they have shown so far points it as a very different feeling game and a different feeling protagonist. This begs the question, why set it in the Thief universe at all? And if you are determined to for marketing reasons, why not just choose a new protagonist altogether and maybe give Garrett a cameo? Stupid excuse from Eidos, but I still don't think it's that big of a deal. The amount of internet handwringing and "OMG they've RUINED the Thief series!" seems awfully silly to me, but to each their own.

His personality made the game just as much as the stealthy game play did. I agree that Garrett's personality was a big positive for the Thief games (although I'd rank it far below the actual gameplay), but don't think that switching voice actors somehow invalidates him as a character. Additionally, I'm simply not seeing anything in these previews that is that massive of a departure from the already established mythos. It still looks plenty Thief-y to me.

no competitive multiplayerI think i speak for most of us by saying "Fine By Me" Eidos Montreal has told Eurogamer that there is "no competitive multiplayer" in the upcoming Thief reboot.
Multiplayer has never been mentioned in connection with the new game, which was first announced in 2009, but given Eidos Montreal's recent history developing the multiplayer component of Tomb Raider, it seemed fair to ask about it. The developer's answers suggest there might be online elements by the time the game ships, but it doesn't sound like you'll be running around The City teabagging fellow thieves and bickering over perks and loadouts.
"Right now, let's say competitive multiplayer, like the example you just gave us - Tomb Raider - there is no plan for that," producer Stephane Roy told me when I visited Eidos Montreal to preview the game recently.
"We are looking to see if there is maybe a challenge mode with some online component, but I'm going to be very honest with you - our main goal with this team is to give you the best single-player experience, just to bring back this franchise, to convince you we're part of the future and not something holding onto the past. It's really demanding, so I don't want to see my team wasting any energy... I want to see them focusing on that." As for the Voice Actor: I for one can not remember the voice from the Thief title i played on the Xbox 1(Deadly Shadows),but as someone who is upset from no David Hayter in MGSV,i can certainly understand why people are upset by it

Garrets original background. A bit more of his original voice. No focus on multiplayer is very good news.

My expectations for this game just divebombed. This is where my heart sinks - SquareEnix is going to push them to get it done on time, and that means getting an E3 demo ready and then rapidly finishing it this year. Will the team rise to the occasion or crack under the pressure? I sincerely hope it is the former rather than the latter, but damn it...my expectations have divebombed too. Sigh.
