I thought Dishonored struck a nice balance between stealth and action, proving that it's not entirely impossible to pull off.  I also remember Thief 3 got slammed by lots of people because they thought it was dumbed down for consoles, and I still ended up enjoying it a lot (one of the few games I've played through 3 times).

I'm still holding out a glimmer of hope, but not much.  Everything I've been hearing leads me to believe the Thief 4 team has completely missed the mark.

Dishonored was very much a spiritual successor to the original Thief games, perhaps even more so than Thief3 was.  I think there is still a chance this could turn out “alright” as a stand-alone title but trying to link it to the Thief brand is doing it a disservice.

Fans of the originals don’t want it because of the changes and everyone else isn’t going to care either way.

My too wishful hope is that the combat stuff is in there if you want to use it, but that you can play the entire game without getting into one fight.

I know there were zombies and such in the original Thief games that you had to fight, but I spent every single one of those games trying to get through without killing anyone.  Dishonored, too.  Haven't finished that one yet (the levels are soooo long), but so far so good.

I haven't watched one of these videos yet because I don't want to have that hope ruined.

Decisions.  GMG has this for $31* on PC, but I'm really leaning towards PS4 on this one.  they should be comparable graphically, but having it on the big screen is very alluring to me.

*GMG sent me a code to get 30% off in addition to the 10% already, but it looks like this one below also applies now.

Caine, thanks for the heads up on the GMG savings. Went ahead and ordered it today. I have a lot of trepidation on this reboot of Thief, but I am such a Thief whore I can't resist being on day one!

Did anyone really expect this to be good? The developers have shown an incredible lack of understanding of what made the Thief series interesting, and have throughout the entire development process clearly shown they have zero interest in taking the features of the old thief and incorporating in the new thief.

This is a nice collection of qoutes and information about the game, showing just how diverged from Thief the game seems to be.

This is where it feels like Kickstarter is the future.  Let game designers with vision create those 'risky' game flavors that the suits want to focus group to death into same-old vanilla.

To be fair, I believe they did remove the QTEs after hearing lots of negative feedback from fans. I'm expecting to be disappointed with Thief in comparison to the first 2 masterpieces, but I am still hoping it will be a fun game.

I've also never done the Dark Mod... I guess I will fall back on that if Thief ends up sucking....

Some mixed impressions from Gamespot.

Those sound like awful impressions, juiced up with just enough forced positivity to convince the editors not to kill the story for fear of damaging the relationship with the studio.

That's my take as well.  I'm not ready to write it off entirely yet, but my expectations and really low and I don't expect it to feel much like a Thief game.  Glad I got it for free.  smile

Yup, we've got the Thief 101 trailer on the homepage:  http://www.gamingtrend.com/video-post/steal-glimpse-gone-gold-thief/

Looks FAR better than I anticipated.  I fully intend to test that Ghost setting...

I am heavily leaning towards picking this up for PS4 now.  I figure that if it's a complete turd-in-sheeps clothing ala ACM, I can sell it off before the trade value is tainted by the stink.  I've also got some AMZ credit to take the price down.

So now I’m really confused.  I thought this was a straight reboot?  The trailer intro seems to imply that it takes place after Thief 3 after all.

If you look at the picture I posted up earlier, you can see that it's anything but. Both in terms of story, but also in terms of gameplay. The mere fact that the lead developer has stated that you can't have combat being as dangerous as it was in the originals shows how little they understand of the lure of the game. They also recently stated that the levels are small because they wanted the player to feel claustrophobic.... Oookay. Pretty much every Thief Level was a huge, huge area giving you tons of options and some of them pretty claustrophobic but more in terms of design, than just shrinking the levels.

After the delay they did a lot of rethinking.  They got rid of the XP system, they made combat shockingly lethal, etc.   I was with you - I was worried a little bit just before the original launch date.  I'm optimistic now - especially after that trailer.  Well done!

That trailer was awesome. Maybe one can say the graphics are okay but not cutting edge, but that's about it. Nothing in that looked cramped to me. I know you can make trailers to be deceiving, but that looked like a lot of fun to me. I think though, that the negative people already have their knives out and will probably savage the game no matter how it plays.

sadly, it seems that they just renamed XP into gold, seeing the latest screens from the game. Abilities now costs gold instead of xp.

I'm hoping for the best, but no preordering because I kind of expect the worst.  I've heard too many things about tiny levels that don't really have real options for approaching a theft and such.

Hence my caution.  I'm hopeful I'll have the build by next week to get a day 1 review out the door.  I'll let ya know, as a true fan of the series, what's what.
