I'd say AC was trying to be more in the vein of Splinter Cell/Hitman without reaching their level (but in it's own merit reaching other new heights, no pun intended).

Ah, Thief 4 would so rock, specially if they make it with a less....restrictive....engine.

AND BIGGER LEVELS!

Thief 4.

Fully open Assassin's Creed/GTA style steampunk fantasy world, missions, open theivery.  Freeform climbing, but more involved utilizing stuff like special arrows, grappling hooks, etc...

Definitely some potential there.

I'd just like to see a thief game with a really good 3D engine.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but to use a quote from the link:

You do realize that means it could be Boob...er, Tomb Raider, right? Yes, I realize that we'd ALL rather it would be Thief, but you know how marketing thinks.

Thief may be my single favorite series of all time that I've never actually finished more than one game for.

I came really close on the last one, but I kept waiting for 360 BC to be good for it, and it just never happened.

I'd love to see the Assassins Creed engine put to use with a Thief game. More indoor stuff, and night missions so they can use all the fancy lighting techniques developers talk on about these days.

Definitely won't be Tomb Raider, not unless they're going to start the next one up before TR: Underworld is released.

Considering the end of Thief 3, it'd be interesting to start the series fresh with a new character, with Garret taking the role of NPC mentor.

Karras was easily my favorite villain.  He was completely insane, and I dug the steampunk ties as well.

It's not easy to see a KEEPER! Not "watcher"!

And to hell with the end of 3. I want to play as GARRET again. Anything else will still be fun, but garret is the coolest protagonist, EVAR!!!

There's a cryptic image posted over on Eidos-Montreal's website right now which shows a big question mark along with the words "Eidos-Montreal's second project to be revealed soon." Text posted above this image confirms that the first new project currently being worked on will be a new game in the classic Deus Ex franchise, but no clues are given about the second project.

Enter the detective poster from the Through the Looking Glass forums. Going by the username jtr7, this eagle-eyed forumite concluded that the font used on the promotional image is the exact same font used in previous games in the Thief series. Win.

Posting a snapshot from one of the series which shows an in-game map, it's easy to see that Eidos-Montreal has used a very similar monochrome color scheme for the new promotional project image.

Other comments from the forumites mention that if it is indeed a new Thief game, then Eidos will likely want to reboot the franchise and offer different gameplay styles than those seen in the older games.

A reboot would be great, but we'll see if it's more like original Thief or Eidos' version of assassin's creed.

Lets hope "reboot" means something more like "Thief Anniversary".  Recreating Thief 1 with updated graphics like they did on Tomb Raider would be far more enjoyable than what Eidos Montreal could come up with.

Thief 1 & 2 are nearly perfect in my opinion.  Thief 3 was “ok” but it just didn’t have the charm and the setting felt a lot more like generic fantasy than the world from the original games.

I've been playing Thief 2 for the first time in several years and just having a blast. I am not sure I have played any game since Thief 2 that I could say is better. I really want a proper Thief 4, but a redone Thief 1 would be ok. Just don't be the aborted Ion Storm Thief 4 which was set in a more modern setting. That would bring on the death murder kill rage.

You forgot to add: Arrows of the Watchers.  slywink

Actually, if I recall, the way the last thief game ended setup a new thief series pretty well and tied up a lot other arcs.

Spoilers on that:
Spoiler for Hiden:
Basically, the whole watcher society collapses, everything.  But, Garret finally accepts and takes his place as the father of a new watcher organization.  As he's walking the streets he goes through a scene just like the beginning of Thief 1 where a talented thief girl sees him, and tries to pickpocket him.  He catches her and says that quote that went along the line of he has work for her, for it is hard to spot a watcher, especially one that does not wish to be seen.

So, female protagonist in the new one, with an old Garret heading up this new watcher organization?

GDC Canada is where they may show Thief 4 off.

Quote
It seems as though Eidos is working hard to revive its famous franchises of several years past. Last year we saw confirmation of Deus Ex 3, and it looks like a convergence of information points toward a reveal of a new game next week. Joystiq points to both Eidos Montreal's Twitter feed and a new issue of Edge Magazine, which contains a teaser alongside pullquotes from GameSpot and GameSpy for what appears to be a new Thief game.
