Well I was starting to get into a bit of rhythm in chapter 1 and was making good progress, that is until I got to the point of having to kill the beast, I have tried 15 times and neither Abigail or myself survives the fight.  I have tried popping a blizzard potion, plus putting oil on my blade and I use the knockback as much as I can but the Beast has some sort of attack that paralyzes me for about 10-15 seconds and it is game over every single freaking time.

Am I screwed here, did I miss something?

FWIW, that's probably the hardest battle (or one of..) in the whole game.

Not sure why the snide comment about me needing to play something simple, like the game is too complex for me or something.  It has nothing to do with complexity, it has to do with a really jacked up camera/control system that has been done better in a lot of other titles.

Oops, I didn't mean any of that, just failed to communicate that. smile

What I meant is that sometimes when I get irritated by some game, I'd go and play something mindless to blow the steam off, because if I don't, I'll keep finding little quirks that will irritate me even more and the game will be ruined for me. Sometimes, I am just not in a right mood for a kind of game I am trying to play and switching benefits me the most. I had issues similar to yours with Gothic 2 and waiting a few months helped.

BTW if you press the quicksave button right after the cutscene, but before the fight with the beast, you quickly replay the battle after you lose. Not sure if you've done that. And Kevin is right - that was the worst fight in the entire game.

So on my 23rd try I beat the Beast.  It was remarkably easy this attempt.  I used the group style which somehow took out all the barghests and left me, abigail and the beast.  With abigal behind it and me in front it went down fast.  Oh well, on to chapter 2.

I am glad you got by that part.  It was rather dumb so early in the game.

The game really starts picking up in Chapter 2 so enjoy.

not according to imdb.com.  it looks like the guy from Deus Ex only did voice work for the original and the sequel.

Well I just finished chapter 2.  The cutscene to start the 3rd chapter was a bit odd to me...why let me hear the things I did, other than to pretty much confirm that no one in this game so far is who they say they are...I mean come on, is anyone in the game freaking genuine?

Did you fully explore the swamps?  I would think it would take a good 10 hours to get through Chapter 2 if you do all of the available sidequests (of which there are a ton).

I refuse to believe that. There's no way anyone could get through chapter 2 in 3 hours without having played it before and powerleveling. Even the second time I played through it, it probably took me about 7-8 hours.

Did every quest I could find.  Just looked at saved games, took me 3 hours 45 minutes to do chapter 2.

Helped the Elf that is in the druids grove with both of his quests. Helped the head lumberjack.  Took care of the drowners, wolves, archespore contracts.  Took care of the drowners at the clay pits.  Escorted gramps and confronted him about being a cannibal.  Never found the missing child other than finding out he was not with the dryad/druids.  I basically talk to anyone named whose name was in green and did what they asked.  Found out about my silver sword, found out about Berengar.  In town I did the quest for the guy looking for some fine wine, helped the brothel, helped the gardener, did the contract for drowning dead as well.

Not sure what to tell you, doesn't matter if you believe me, and I wasn't complaining about the length of the chapter.  Was just stating that I was on to chapter 3.  Maybe I shave a bunch of time by not bothering to listen to the voiced dialogue.

According to the Wiki there are 42 quests in Chapter 3, so I'd guess you probably missed some of them.  That list of what you did in town seems short. Not that it matters.  Did you get all the sex cards?  That's what matters.   icon_lol

Prologue
Chapter 1 (outside the town)
Chapter 2 (inside the town, visits to the swamp)

He's referring to Chapter 2 and the number of quests is what the Wiki lists as the quests for Chapter 2.  Now, admittedly it seperates out the main story part into different quests, but it's still accurate for that chapter.

Looking at the Wiki, I missed 4 quests.  I didn't complete the quest to find the missing child, and I missed the ones where someone was only to be found during a specific 1 hour increment in game time at a specific location.

As for the sex cards, I could care less.  For me the sex adds absolutely nothing to the game and quite honestly I feel the game would be better off without it.

It's not meant as a criticism, but maybe this game isn't really for you. It doesn't sound like you're having much fun.
I completed the Witcher after about 1,5 month, and I think I did about 40+ hours about it. I had grown to care about the characters, the environment, my quests... For me, it was like reading a book over a longer period, where I knew I could pick it up, and play in it a bit more and it wouldn't disappoint me. Almost like a MMORPG actually.

I think if you're rushing through it (and 3 hours for chapter 2, excuse me, IS rushing), this is not the game you're expecting.

As another comparison, I think Baldur's Gate 2's act 2 took me about as long as the Witcher's act 2.

The witcher is not a game that's gonna blow you away by doing incredibly cool stuff, but it will stay with you and will have you thinking about it long after it's done. I like to think it's more about the ride, than the ending... I don't know if I'm making much sense, I'm trying to convey that the 'feeling' I got as playing Geralt was almost unprecedented in games. Especially games from the last 5 years...

I am actually starting to enjoy the game...however I am still able to see things that for me are faults for the game.  I really don't understand why folks think I rushed through chapter 2.  I really don't care if the game takes me 20 hours or if it takes 40 hours as long as at the end I am glad that I played.  The game started off slow for me, and while I still don't really feel connected to the characters and story, I am enjoying the gameplay mechanics as the combat is starting to click for me.  I did every quest I stumbled upon in the course of the main quest.  I found a few that were really random on my part.  I don't think I power levelled, although chapter one was tough for me with that fight against the beast, so I did go back and level up a few times just so I could beat that battle.  The fights in chapter 2 were way easier than anything in chapter 1.  I read the dialogue, but don't listen to the voiced stuff as I don't really care for the voice talent in the game, can't really put a finger on why, but it just sounds a bit off to me.  I am a pretty quick reader so like I said, I may shave a bunch of time by not listening to the voice work.  Also since I could care less about the sex aspect of the game perhaps I shave time but not worry about trying to score with the women.

This is a big theme in the game and something that many people like a lot about it.  There is no black and white.  Everyone has other motivations and is both good and evil.  I am not sure I like that because I like being a good guy and helping good guys but everyone I help has some faults.  However that is the way the game is.

You will not find anyone in the game who is pure one way or the other.

You didn't get the "find out Dandelion is a closet serial killer" quest?  You really missed out!  Very well done.  The whole thing ran from Chapter 1 until the Epilogue so if you missed it in Chapter 1 you are out of luck sorry.

I think almost all of the missed quests from Ch 2 can be completed in (but no later than) Chapter 3.
