NINTENDO NEWS: NINTENDO ANNOUNCES WII INFORMATION, WORLDWIDE SHIPMENTS

May 25, 2006

Following its overwhelming debut at E3 2006, Nintendo today announced the current fiscal year unit shipment forecast for its new home game system, Wii™. Nintendo also confirmed that the price of the Wii system, which incorporates unique freehand control, will not exceed $250 in America, or ¥25,000 in Japan. The company plans to ship 6 million systems to retailers around the world between its launch in the fourth quarter of 2006 and the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2007.

The projections are part of a full-year financial forecast that sees growth of 18 percent in sales globally, based on anticipated continuing strong demand for the Nintendo DS™ portable game system, as well as a successful launch for Wii.

The company also said it expects to sell 17 million Wii games in the period. Exact launch dates, identification of the launch library of titles and details on the unique Virtual Console aspect of Wii will be announced soon.

Yep me too.  I'm guessing "will not exceed $250" is really doubletalk for $249.  When I think that $250 is the same price I paid for my PS2, my PSP and my latest video card for my PC I'm thinking its a no-brainer for me.

Also keep in mind that Nintendo has never released a standard console (NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube) for anything other than $199 to start, so who knows what it'll be priced at.

But Nintendo can safely raise the price of the Wii and still make a killing by being cheaper than the other two consoles. Looks like Nintendo will actually make money this generation.

It's pretty amazing now that consoles can be released at $250 and everyone gushes about how cheap it is.

I really, really think Nintendo should try to get the unit as close to 199.99 as possible. If this is the mainstream video game experience, the sub-two hundred price tag will have a huge psychological advantage, and Nintendo could simply flood the marketplace. Even, say, 225 bucks would better than 250. (And I think the yen conversion is something like 220 USD.)

I just don't like the ambiguity of the "not over 250" quote.

Oh, come on!  Nintendo wouldn't be able to make money if there were only 250 at the US launch.

At that price point, I'd much rather pick up a Wii around launch time over a PS3.  Then maybe the PS3 after it gets a nice price drop.

I read elsewhere that the price they quoted for Japan is the same price they've released all their consoles there, and is the equivalent of $200.  $250 would be a little steep considering you can get an 360 (albeit one no sane person would buy slywink) for $300 and the Wii is much less powerful.

pretty much when you do the conversions, the Yen price was allways $20 bucks over what they laumched in the US, and I think it's safe to say here, that it will be 199. My thinking is that they are waiting on some final cost analysis to come back on production and have left themselves room to be at 249 if they have to. There's got to be someone at Nintendo right now trying to figure out or negotiate a contract to get the system produced for as little as possible.

History supports the $199 price as well.  Both the NES and the SNES launched for that much, and in '96 before the N64 was released Peter Main stated that the price of the N64 wouldn't exceed $250 - and you guessed it, it retailed for $199.

So let me see.... for the price of a PS3 I can pick up a 360 and a Wii?  No wonder Microsoft executives keep verbally dry humping Nintendo in interviews.

I have to be insane, I was hoping for $150.

$250 doesn't seem outrageous, however, especially if it comes with a game.

it's better to overshoot then undershoot.  I'm betting on the 199 pricing as well.

I just spent $250 on JRPG's I may or may not ever play.  So I am in for the @$250 Wii!  Now I should stock up on Cube games I've never played.

Despite throwing money away like that, there is a real psychological barrier at the $500+ (PS3) price point.  When it creeps above $300 I really start to think about how much I can/can't live without it.

I'm happy as a clam now.  It will be a black day when the bill comes.
